WASHINGTON, D.C. — Joint Staff Spokesperson Navy Capt. Jereal Dorsey provided the following readout: 

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., met with Botswana Defence Force Commander Lt. Gen. Placid Segokgo in Gaborone, Botswana today.

The leaders discussed the current security environment in Africa and bilateral security cooperation priorities. Gen. Brown thanked Lt. Gen. Segokgo for Botswana’s leadership in co-hosting the 2024 African Chiefs of Defense Conference (ACHOD). This year marks the first time the U.S. has co-hosted ACHOD with an African nation, and the first time the conference will take place within Africa.

The U.S. and Botswana are strong defense partners committed to promoting security and stability throughout the region.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., spoke with New Zealand Defence Force Chief of Defence Air Marshal Tony Davies today by phone. This was the first phone call between the leaders since Air Marshal Davies became New Zealand’s Chief of Defence.  

Gen. Brown and Air Marshal Davies discussed the current security environment in Europe and the Middle East. The United States and New Zealand continue to stand firmly with Ukraine and remain focused on collaborating with regional partners to enhance maritime security.   

The leaders also exchanged views on strengthening security collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and reaffirmed their continued commitment to advancing a shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.  

The longstanding defense partnership between the United States and New Zealand is vital to ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

On June 6, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., met with French Chief of Defence Gen. Thierry Burkhard and United Kingdom Chief of the Defence Staff Adm. Sir Tony Radakin in Normandy, France. 

The leaders exchanged views on the security environment in the Middle East and discussed opportunities to bolster defense and deterrence in the region and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to innocent civilians in Gaza. 

The leaders also discussed Russia’s unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine, including continued military collaboration alongside allies and partners to support Ukraine’s defense.  

The longstanding military alliances between the United States, UK, and France play a critical role in safeguarding peace and security worldwide.

On May 2, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., met with Australia Chief of the Defence Force Gen. Angus Campbell, Chief of Staff for Japan Joint Staff Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, and Philippines Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Romeo Brawner at the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii.

The leaders exchanged views on strengthening security collaboration, including enhancing military capacity, readiness, and interoperability.

In April, six vessels and four aircraft from Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and the United States jointly sailed and operated in the South China Sea, underscoring shared commitment to regional maritime security.

The four leaders reaffirmed their continued commitment to advancing a shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.
