A man has been jailed for firearms offences after forensic work by officers from the Trident and Area Crime Command linked him to a gun and ammunition found in discarded bags.

Imran Mustafa, 22 (28.11.1995) from Whitchurch Road, Kensington, W11, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm (count one), and possession of ammunition (count two) at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 9 February 2018.

He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for count one and two years’ imprisonment for count two, to run concurrently.

On 14 June 2015, officers were called to an address in Bassett Road, Kensington W10, on an unrelated matter.

Whilst making enquires at an address, the officers could hear movement inside a flat and became aware of property being thrown from the building.

A search of the area around the building located two rucksacks, which were found to contain a semi automatic handgun, a magazine containing rounds of ammunition, and 14 further rounds of ammunition in a sock. At this point, it was unclear from which property the bags had been thrown.

An investigation was launched by the Trident North West Reactive team. Enquires led detectives to Mustafa, who also matched the description of a male seen leaving Roebuck House on that day.

Forensic enquiries resulted in evidence that linked Mustafa to the firearm and ammunition and he was arrested for these offences on 22 May 2017. Mustafa admitted having visited the block of flats but initially denied the allegation. However, when he appeared in court he entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity.

Detective Constable Fay Brown, the investigating officer from the Trident North West Reactive team, said: “This has been a long and painstaking enquiry but Mustafa is now facing the consequences of his actions and will spend a long time in prison for his offences.”

Detective Sergeant Mark Attridge added: “The sentence today should send a message to those who seek to possess illegal firearms. Trident officers continue to work tirelessly to track down suspects involved in gun crime and place them before the courts.”

ABUJA, Nigeria – Getting INTERPOL’s vital global policing information into the hands of frontline law enforcement officers throughout Nigeria is part of an ongoing expansion programme by national authorities.

Nigeria’s work to ensure agencies at key border control points, including the immigration service and customs, can access INTERPOL’s global databases was a key part of discussions during INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock’s first mission to the country.

The INTERPOL Chief met with Minister of the Interior Lt Gen Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS), Muhammed Babandede.

Connectivity between the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja with other agencies such as the NIS, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were highlighted as good practice in ensuring a seamless transfer of policing information.

Bodies including the UN Security Council, via resolution 2396 (2017), and the International Civil Aviation Organization have again recently called on member countries to use INTERPOL’s global databases and implement Advance Passenger Identification (API) mechanisms.

INTERPOL’s databases – which are checked more than 150 times every second – contain details of more than 43,200 foreign terrorist profiles in addition to nearly 75 million stolen and lost travel documents, stolen vehicles, DNA and fingerprints.

Secretary General Stock praised the head of NCB Abuja and Executive Committee delegate for Africa, Commissioner Olushola Subair for his important work in expanding Nigeria’s connections to the global policing network.

“Information is the lifeblood of policing, and Nigeria is taking major steps forward in making sure their officers can do their job effectively, no matter where their duty station,” said Secretary General Stock.

“Inter-agency cooperation is also important, so the INTERPOL connections being made with bodies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is also welcomed,” added Mr Stock.

Knowing how to use data is as important as accessing information. Nigeria has hosted a range of INTERPOL meetings and training courses including on INTERPOL’s Firearms Policing Capabilities. These comprise the Illicit Arms Records and tracing Management System (iARMS), the INTERPOL Ballistic Information Network (IBIN) and the INTERPOL Firearms Reference Table (IFRT).

Participants from a range of national security agencies were trained on how to share data at the national and global level on the movement of legal, and illegal firearms, as well as details of weapons which have been used in a crime.

Nigeria has also seconded specialized officers to INTERPOL offices around the world, including the General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France, the Regional Bureau in Abidjan and the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation in Singapore.

Two men were jailed on Friday, 9 February, for a total of nine and a half years after being caught in possession of a loaded gun and a Samurai sword.

Following a week-long trial at Inner London Crown Court, Mucktar Khan, 19 (02.02.99) of Tavy Close, Kennington, was convicted of possession of a firearm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

Joshua Eduardo, 18 (8.3.99) of Kennington Park Road, Vauxhall, pleaded guilty to the same charges at an earlier hearing. He was sentenced to three years and six months’ imprisonment.

The pair were caught as the result of an intelligence-led operation carried out by the Met’s Trident and Area Crime Command on 15 February 2017.

Armed officers pulled over a taxi carrying Khan and Eduardo just after 01:00hrs in Albany Road, Camberwell.

Eduardo was found in possession of a bag containing a loaded revolver which was fully cocked. Two rounds of the firearm appeared to have been fired.

Eduardo also had a Samurai sword, which he sought to conceal by putting it down his trouser leg as the vehicle was stopped by police.

When searched, Khan was found to be wearing ballistic body armour and had a balaclava in his possession.

The firearm was examined at the Met’s Firearms Forensics Unit and was identified as a Hinge Frame Webley Revolver of .32 calibre.

Khan was also found guilty of a Section 49 Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) offence after he failed to disclose a PIN number for a mobile phone.

Detective Constable Martin Reader from the Met’s Trident and Area Crime Command said: “As the result of a proactive, intelligence-led operation these two men were caught in possession of two lethal weapons.

“Trident detectives work tirelessly to remove illegal firearms and knives from the streets of London.

“The lengthy custodial sentences handed to these two defendants reflect the potentially fatal consequences of possessing a loaded gun and a Samurai sword in a public place.”

Both defendants were found not guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Man jailed for fraud after Grenfell Tower fire

A man who falsely claimed to have lost family members in the Grenfell Tower fire has been jailed for fraud offences.

Anh Nhu Nguyen, 53, (4.11.64) of Beckenham Road, Bromley appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 9 February where he was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment.

On 2 November 2017 he pleaded guilty to:

– two counts of fraud by false representation, gaining money, hotel accommodation and clothing; and

– one count of making an untrue statement to obtain a passport.

Detectives from the Met launched an investigation after suspicions were raised about the validity of Nguyen’s claims.

Nguyen came forward to authorities in the immediate aftermath of the fire and was assigned family liaison officers after he claimed that he lost his wife and son in the fire.

He provided officers with a very detailed account of how he lost sight of his wife and son as they tried to leave Grenfell Tower.

He stated he was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and treated for smoke inhalation. Hospital checks show he had never been there.

He claimed financial support after saying he had lost all his property during the fire, and was provided emergency hotel accommodation.

Police noticed clear inconsistencies in his story and spoke to nearby residents of the flat within Grenfell Tower that Nguyen claimed to live in, who confirmed that the man did not live at the address.

Relatives of the person who lived in the flat Nguyen said he lived in were made aware of the investigation, and were spoken to by their family liaison officers. They confirmed the Nguyen did not reside at the address.

Officers traced the actual address in Bromley where Nguyen was living at the time of the fire and it was also established that he did not have a wife or child.

On 28 June 2017 he was arrested on suspicion of fraud and charged the following day.

DC James Tauber, the investigating officer, said: “Nguyen’s fraud was designed to make sure he profited from the support intended for the true victims of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.

“He went to great lengths to fabricate an elaborate story about his escape from the tower.”

Detective Superintendent Matt Bonner said: “The distress and suffering caused to so many that night in June is harrowing. People lost their homes, all their possessions and tragically their families and loved ones.

“Not only did Nguyen take money, housing and clothing intended for genuine victims, he diverted police time and resources away from those who most needed it.

“We will investigate anyone who we think is fraudulently profiting from the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.”

Man guilty of murdering Finchley student

A man has been found guilty of the murder of 24-year-old Seyyed Rasta Mir-Feyzi in Finchley last summer.

Another man has been found guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) in the same case.

[A] Haaris Rana, 22, (17.09.95), of Stainby Close, West Drayton, was found guilty of murder. He had already pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified.

[B] Yasir Ibrahim, 22, (30.10.95) of Maddison Close, East Finchley, was found guilty of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Both were found guilty by a majority jury at the Old Bailey on Friday, 9 February.

They will be sentenced at the same court on Wednesday, 14 February.

Police were called at 20:35hrs on Wednesday, 31 May 2017 to reports of a car in collision with a pedestrian in the car park of the Great North Leisure Park off High Road, Finchley.

The victim was assaulted during a fight involving a number of people in the car park. Shortly afterwards the car was deliberately driven at the victim.

Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

Seyyed was taken by London’s Air Ambulance to an east London hospital. He was pronounced dead on Thursday, 1 June 2017 at 18:00hrs.

A post-mortem examination took place on 5 June 2017 at Northwick Park Hospital Mortuary and gave the cause of death as catastrophic head injury.

The car – a white BMW – was abandoned at the location but Rana and Ibrahim fled the scene heading towards Finchley High Road.

They were arrested on 4 June 2017 and charged two days later.

Seyyed, from North Finchley, had completed his Bachelor of Science degree in computer network security at Westminster Univsersity shortly before his death.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes, from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “Rana’s use of his car as a murder weapon, in the same way that some people use knives, is one of the most repulsive attacks I have seen.

“He is a truly vicious person, who I’m extremely glad is off the streets.

“I hope that today’s conviction brings the family of Mr Mir-fayzi a measure of comfort.”

Mr Mir-Feyzi, Seyyed’s father, added: “Since my son’s death, the man responsible for his murder has also killed my family and me too. I feel like I have lost a part of my body. Knowing that he can never come back has left me and my wife broken.

“We donated our son’s organs and from this, parts of our son live on. Four people have the gift of life because of his death. We were informed that a man in his 30s received one kidney, a female in her 20s received the other, a man in his 30s received his liver and another man in his 40s received our son’s heart.

“It is terrible that his life was cut short in such an unnecessary way. He had a future, he wanted to join the Royal Navy or the Police. He had plans; he had an amazing life; he was loved and I know he would have gone on to do great things.”
