Counter Terrorism Policing calls on the public to report terrorist content they see online

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

The Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) has opened reviews into 55 new cases this week, following a significant number of referrals from the public reporting potential terrorist content online.

Commenting on the work done by the CTIRU, Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “When it comes to tackling the use of the internet to further terrorism, support from the public is essential.

“Following last week’s horrific terrorist attack by Hamas, and the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has led to significant concern in communities in London and across the country, I want to thank the public for helping us by reporting potential terrorist content online to our Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU).

“These referrals have already made a significant impact and we are currently reviewing 55 cases.

“They will also enable Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) to work with tech companies to remove content assessed to breach UK terrorism legislation, making the internet less permissive for terrorists and safer for those in our communities who may be vulnerable to radicalisation. They can also lead to investigations being launched into those in the UK who are suspected of breaching UK terrorism legislation through their online conduct.

“If you see something online that you think is inciting terrorist violence or activity, report it anonymously via our Public Referral Tool.

“You can also download the iREPORTit app on your smartphone which enables you to report content anonymously and directly from a browser or an app.

“In an emergency, call 999.”

Men responsible for watch robbery jailed following prompt investigation by Met officers

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

Two men have been jailed for robbery after they followed a tourist to steal his watch.

Mohammed Ababsa, 38 [2.11.84] of Salisbury Road, NW6 and Achraf Hammouth, 26 [20.1.97] of Cricklewood Broadway, NW2 appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 13 October where they pleaded guilty to robbery.

At the same hearing the judge sentenced Ababsa to two years and eight months imprisonment. Hammouth was sentenced to two years and three months imprisonment. Both were also sentenced to pay a victim surcharge of £228 each.

On Friday, 15 September, the victim, a 51-year-old male tourist, left a bar on Wardour Street, W1 to walk back to his hotel.

The two suspects approached him from behind on Shaftesbury Avenue and barged into him from both sides – as they did this, one of them took his watch from his wrist before running away toward Compton Street.

As the victim chased the suspects, he called police and following a search by officers of the surrounding streets, one suspect was arrested on Litchfield St, WC2 and the other was detained at Newport Place, WC2.

They were taken to west London police stations and were charged that same day.

Detective Constable Dalila Gomes investigating said: “The Canadian victim was a former soldier, he had travelled the world in his professional career and the watch, that had great sentimental value, had travelled with him.

“The defendants have let down the people of London who value tourism and the contribution it makes to our vibrant city. Their callous and cowardly actions toward a visitor to our capital has, quite rightly, cost them their freedom.

“It saddens me that the watch was not recovered – I sincerely hope that the sentences handed down bring the victim some satisfaction.”

A demonstration is due to take place on Saturday 14 October, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Central London.

Ahead of the ‘March for Palestine’ a Section 12 (3) Public Order Act 1986 has been authorised for the route of the march, which will be in effect from midday on Saturday. This means those taking part, must observe the route from Portland Place to Regent’s Street, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. Any person participating in or associated with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign protest, must not deviate from this route, or they could be subjected to arrest. The map of the route can be found in image 1.

Similarly a Section 14 (3) Public Order Act 1986 condition has also been imposed from midday on Saturday, ahead of a protest expected to take place on Kensington High Street. The conditions prohibit an assembly within the designated Section 14 area, which can be found in image 2. The area in Kensington High Street will be clearly marked by barriers. Any person assembling here or in the areas marked in image 2 in order to participate in or associate with the London Palestine Protest or Palestine Solidarity Campaign may be subject to arrest.

Officers will work hard to ensure that the right to peaceful protest is maintained.
