Misconduct panel finds former officer would have been dismissed

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A gross misconduct hearing has found that a former Met officer would have been dismissed without notice were he still in post.

Former Sgt Anish Sharma, who was based on the West Area Command, faced allegations that he had breached the professional standards of behaviour with regards to honestly and integrity, discreditable conduct, equality and diversity, and authority, respect and courtesy. A hearing which concluded today, Friday 27 October, found that he had breached them all.

Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson, in charge of policing for West Area, said: “Sharma’s actions were both appalling and cowardly. Following his completely inappropriate behaviour, he then engaged in improper communications with a third party, before deleting a number of messages prior to his arrest and subsequent interview. Clearly he has shown himself to be someone who falls well below the standards we expect from our officers and staff, and the panel have made the right decision to ensure he will never work in policing again.”

On 30 July 2021 Sharma attended a party in the Thames Valley area. Whilst in the garden, he inappropriately touched a woman without her consent by putting his hand on her thigh. He then exposed himself to her. The woman told a third party, who relayed this information back to Sharma. This individual and Sharma subsequently engaged in communication, some of which was deleted by Sharma, prior to his arrest and subsequent interview.

On 31 July 2021 Sharma was arrested by officers from Thames Valley Police on suspicion of sexual assault by touching. He was suspended from duty. The criminal investigation was later closed with no further action and a gross misconduct hearing arranged. On 3 April 2023 Sharma resigned from the Met.

Following today’s outcome, Sharma will now be added to the Barred List held by the College of Policing.

Those appearing on the list cannot be employed by police, local policing bodies (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct or Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

Counter terrorism detectives appeal for help from the public in identifying four people

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

Met counter terrorism detectives are releasing images of four people they would like to speak to in relation to two alleged incidents and are asking the public get in touch if they can help identify them.

Appeal 1:
Social media footage of a pro-Palestine protest in Whitehall on Saturday, 14 October shows two women with images of paragliders on their tops.

Detectives have been working to identify these women and we are now looking to identify a third woman that is seen on CCTV with them. This woman has a placard with the paraglider image attached to it and we are now releasing new and clearer images of these women as we seek the public’s help.

The first woman is dark skinned, and is wearing light brown trousers and a long-sleeved red top with an image of a paraglider on the back. She initially had a blue denim jacket tied around her waist and later put this on over her red top. She is wearing a light blue medical face mask and a dark scarf or bandana around her head. She also has a dark red shoulder bag.

The second woman has light brown skin with dark hair clipped up at the back of her head. She is wearing black leggings, black boots and has a large black shoulder bag. She initially wore a dark hooded top – with a paraglider image attached to the back – and later put on a light brown coat.

The third woman is holding the placard with the paraglider image on the post, appears to be aged in her 20s to 40s and Afro-Caribbean. She is wearing a large pendant which we believe is green, a dark scarf with a floral pattern on it, a red jacket and red scarf or bandana around her head.

Appeal 2:

The fourth person that we are seeking to identify is a man seen waving a placard with the words “I fully support Hamas” on it during a protest on Bond Street on Saturday, 21 October.

He has short dark hair, light skin and is wearing a dark jacket with a light top underneath, a light stripy scarf around his neck, and light trousers or jeans.

Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “Detectives have carried out numerous enquiries to identify these people and we are now asking the public to take a good look at these images and tell us if they know who these people are.

“I would stress that we want to speak to these people to help us with our enquiries, and in fact, I would urge them to get in touch with us directly.”

The public is urged to take a look at these pictures and if they know these people or have any information that could help the investigation, to please report it in confidence online at gov.uk/ACT or by calling 0800 789 321.

Appeal to trace vulnerable pensioner missing from Crayford

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

Police are appealing for the public’s help to find a missing man from Crayford.

Detectives are becoming extremely concerned for the welfare of Bob who has been missing since Tuesday, 24 October.

Bob is 85 and was last seen via doorbell camera footage at approximately 03:54hrs on Galloway Drive, Crayford heading in the direction of Station Road and Dartford Heath.

He has not been seen or heard from by his family since that time and this is concerning for police and his family.

Bob was last seen wearing a light blue/grey coat and trousers and has a distinctive stooped walk, as seen in the doorbell image.

Detective Inspector Kirsten Hadleigh from Met’s South East Public Protection Unit said:

“Bob is vulnerable and suffers with dementia which is why it is important we find him fast. My concern that Bob is in danger increases every moment that he remains missing.

“We are now appealing to the public for their assistance, I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen Bob over the past few days.

“I would urge people to check dash cam or other camera footage from the Dartford Heath/ Shepherds Lane areas from 04:00hrs-05:00hrs on Tuesday, 24 October. This footage may have captured Bob and this could prove vital in our efforts to find him.”

The police investigation continues, anyone with information is asked to call 101 or post @MetCC quoting reference 23MIS035913 to provide information.

Man who groomed child using dating apps jailed following Met investigation

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A man who used dating apps and social media to groom a 14-year-old child before sexually abusing him has been jailed following an extensive Met investigation triggered by one piece of information from one informant.

George Watkins, 31, (13.10.92) of 25 Sunbower Avenue, Dunstable pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court on 25 January 2023 to 19 offences, including seven counts of Sexual Activity with a Child, three counts of Causing or Inciting Sexual Activity with a Child and one count of Sexual Communications with a Child.

He also pleaded guilty to five counts of Making Indecent Images of a Child, two counts of Taking Indecent Images of a Child and one count of Distributing Indecent Images of a Child.

He was sentenced at the same court yesterday, Thursday 26 October to 11 years imprisonment. He also received a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

DCI Hardeep Kaur formally of the Met’s Central North Command Unit said: “This investigation shows how the Met will relentlessly pursue those who commit sexual offences.

“Watkins arranged to meet boys, aged 14 and 16 years, whom he initially befriended on the Grindr app.

“The 14-year-old was sexually abused on seven different occasions, which Watkins covertly filmed and shared with others. The locations of this abuse included Watkins’ home address, an Air BnB and Watkins’ car.

“In order to facilitate this offending, Watkins engaged in sexual communications with the 14-year-old on social media. He also shared a video of himself sexually abusing the 14-year-old to another individual online.

“The 16-year-old was covertly filmed engaging in sexual activity with Watkins, which Watkins kept as a trophy for his own sexual gratification.

“Watkins also convinced the 16-year-old to commit and film sexual activity with a 13-year-old child in their own home, and to send the videos to him.

“In addition to these offences, a total of 457 indecent images of children, which Watkins appeared to have obtained online, were found across his devices.

“This case should be a warning to the public, and in particular young people, of the risk in using dating apps. Such apps and sites can be used by paedophiles like Watkins. They manipulate and lie to vulnerable girls and boys for their own sexual gratification and as a gateway to committing horrific sexual offences.”

The 16-year-old boy said in a statement which was read at court: “When I reflect upon what Watkins did to me, and the fact a paedophile who was in a position of trust exploited me during a vulnerable moment of my life, I feel completely used and taken advantage of. The entire experience just doesn’t sit right with me mentally, and I feel physically sick just thinking about it.”

The 14-year-old boy said in his statement: “The fact that he used me for his own sexual gratification and did not seem to care about how I was doing at the time has made me feel used and exploited, and sub-human, as if my opinion did not matter at all.”

DS Jules Manock of the Met’s Central North Safeguarding Unit said: “Watkins displayed an extreme arrogance over the course of our investigation into him, and showed no remorse whatsoever. He used Grindr and social media to seek out young males who were gay but had not come out to their own families. Watkins used his charm, confidence and skills as a secondary school teacher to obtain the trust of these boys.

“He repeatedly sexually abused a 14-year-old boy, taking away his childhood and filming this for his own sick gratification. Watkins thought he would get away with his vile and depraved acts. An extensive police investigation and above all the bravery of the victim-survivors helped to ensure that he was proven wrong.”

DC Stefan Wimmer of the Met’s Central North Safeguarding Unit said: “The charges which Watkins has pleaded guilty to are a product of our thorough and relentless investigation, all of which began with one piece of information from one informant.

“In January 2019, the informant went into their local police station to report that Watkins had shared an explicit image of them without their consent and appeared to have a predilection for males under the age of 16. We then carried out a thorough investigation into Watkins’ offending, involving three search warrants, five premises searches, and five interviews with Watkins. We also made painstaking efforts to go through each of his devices to gather evidence.

“Watkins was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, capable of winning the trust of vulnerable children in order to fulfil his disgusting, disturbing and despicable intentions towards them. It is the presence of individuals of this sort in society that reminds me of why I am employed as a police officer.”

It became quickly apparent that Watkins posed an immense risk to the public due to his ability to manipulate and ultimately deceive others, and due to his working as a teacher at a private secondary school in North London. As such, a number of measures were used to maintain control of him, including work with partner agencies, the termination of his employment, and bail conditions following his initial arrest on 4 July 2019.

In order to obtain even greater control of Watkins, he was initially arrested and charged with 27 counts of Making Indecent Images of Children, to which he pleaded guilty on 21 April 2021. He was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on 29 July 2021 to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was also granted for seven years. The investigation into Watkins continued, resulting in the further charges for which he has now been sentenced.

DC Wimmer added: “I am aware that the victim-survivors want their experiences to be a warning to other young people, so I am sharing their message: Please take great care when interacting with people online, and ask yourself: which precautions am I taking to protect myself? Who exactly am I speaking to? And how trustworthy are they in actual fact?

“Please remember that dating apps are designed for adults and are not a safe space for young people to discover sex and sexuality.”

Man charged with the murder of Justin Henry

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, who are investigating the disappearance of Justin Henry, have charged a man with his murder.

[B] Louis Benjamin, 29 (29.03.94) of Waddon New Road, Croydon was charged on Wednesday, 25 October with one count of murder.

Mr Henry’s family have been informed of the charge.

Benjamin appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 26 October. Benjamin will next appear at the Central Criminal Court on Monday, 39 October.

Benjamin was arrested late on Tuesday, 24 October at an address in Croydon.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Webb, of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “As a result of our inquiries a man has been charged with Justin Henry’s murder. We have spoken to Mr Henry’s family and we fully understand the deep distress this development will cause. I have assured his family that the search to find Mr Henry continues and I know they will be hoping that all may yet be well. However, based on all the available evidence, we have approached the CPS who have authorised a charge of murder.

“I want the public to understand that this charge does not mean the end of our appeal. We still need all the help the public can give and we still need anyone who has any information, no matter how small they think it is, to make contact and tell us what they know. This is not just a plea to help police. Mr Henry’s family are enduring a dreadful ordeal and they are desperate for news and are also seeking your help.”

Justin Henry, 34, was reported missing to police on Monday, 16 October.

He has links to the SE23 area and was last seen in person on the evening of Sunday, 15 October at the address of his partner in Brixton.

He family has not seen or heard from him since, and this is totally out of character.

Police are actively trying to establish Justin’s movements, in particular late on Sunday, 15 October, and in the early hours of Monday, 16 October.

At around 21:50hrs on Sunday, 15 October, Justin was seen on CCTV buying food at a McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant on London Road in Croydon.

Enquiries have led officers to believe Justin drove from that restaurant to nearby Waddon New Road where his vehicle, a silver Mercedes E Class, remained for approximately two-and-a-half hours.

The Mercedes was later located on Monday, 16 October in Kingswood Drive, SE19.

It is unclear who was driving the vehicle when it arrived at Kingswood Drive shortly after 01:00hrs on Monday, 16 October, due to indistinct CCTV image of the driver, but Justin’s family state that it was not him.

On Wednesday, 18 October, a 27-year-old woman [A] was arrested in connection with the investigation on suspicion of kidnapping; she has since been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in mid-January 2024.

Officers have conducted forensic examinations of an address in Croydon and Justin’s car, as well as extensive CCTV and phone inquiries.

However detectives desperately need more information about Justin’s disappearance and the days leading up to him going missing.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 or contact via Twitter/X @MetCC. Please quote Operation Ashgulf or CAD 5224/21Oct.
