A man has been charged with a murder last summer in Islington.

[F] Michael Dyra, 22, (29.12.95) of Hoxton, N1, was charged on Thursday, 8 February with the murder of Jonathan McPhillips.

Dyra was further charged with grievous bodily harm with intent; violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrate’ Court today – Friday, 9 February – and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey next week.

On 25 February 2017 at around 00:40hrs, police were called by London Ambulance Service (LAS) to reports of a stabbing on Upper Street, N1.

Jonathan McPhillips, a 28-year-old father-of-two, was found injured and taken to an east London hospital where he died on 1 March 2017.

A post-mortem examination gave cause of death as a single stab wound to the chest.

Dyra was arrested on 22 March 2017 and charged as above.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command continue to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to call the incident room on 020 8345 3775. To give information anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org.

Eight other men were arrested in connection with the investigation. Six of the men have been released under investigation and two have been released with no further action.

A serving police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a man at a police cordon in east London last year.

PC Kashif Mahmood, 29 based at Hackney borough was found guilty of assault by beating at Hendon Magistrates’ Court today, Friday, 9 February.

He will be sentenced at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 February.

PC Mahmood was investigated as the result of a complaint made after a man sustained a cut to his head on 5 May 2017 during an incident at a police cordon in Clapton, east London.

Police were present at a cordon, on an unrelated matter, close to the junction of Almack Road and Powerscroft Road. A man repeatedly approached police officers at the cordon, before being involved in an incident with PC Mahmood in which he sustained a cut to his head.

The Metropolitan Police referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (now the Independent Office for Police Conduct) on 11 May and a decision was made to independently investigate the officer’s use of force.

Following the Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation a file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who authorised a charge.

PC Mahmood was charged on 11 December 2017.

The officer remains on restricted duties.

Now that criminal proceedings have concluded, misconduct proceedings will now take place.

A man who falsely claimed to have lost family members in the Grenfell Tower fire has been jailed for fraud offences.

Anh Nhu Nguyen, 53, (4.11.64) of Beckenham Road, Bromley appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 9 February where he was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment.

On 2 November 2017 he pleaded guilty to:

– two counts of fraud by false representation, gaining money, hotel accommodation and clothing; and

– one count of making an untrue statement to obtain a passport.

Detectives from the Met launched an investigation after suspicions were raised about the validity of Nguyen’s claims.

Nguyen came forward to authorities in the immediate aftermath of the fire and was assigned family liaison officers after he claimed that he lost his wife and son in the fire.

He provided officers with a very detailed account of how he lost sight of his wife and son as they tried to leave Grenfell Tower.

He stated he was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and treated for smoke inhalation. Hospital checks show he had never been there.

He claimed financial support after saying he had lost all his property during the fire, and was provided emergency hotel accommodation.

Police noticed clear inconsistencies in his story and spoke to nearby residents of the flat within Grenfell Tower that Nguyen claimed to live in, who confirmed that the man did not live at the address.

Relatives of the person who lived in the flat Nguyen said he lived in were made aware of the investigation, and were spoken to by their family liaison officers. They confirmed the Nguyen did not reside at the address.

Officers traced the actual address in Bromley where Nguyen was living at the time of the fire and it was also established that he did not have a wife or child.

On 28 June 2017 he was arrested on suspicion of fraud and charged the following day.

DC James Tauber, the investigating officer, said: “Nguyen’s fraud was designed to make sure he profited from the support intended for the true victims of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.

“He went to great lengths to fabricate an elaborate story about his escape from the tower.”

Detective Superintendent Matt Bonner said: “The distress and suffering caused to so many that night in June is harrowing. People lost their homes, all their possessions and tragically their families and loved ones.

“Not only did Nguyen take money, housing and clothing intended for genuine victims, he diverted police time and resources away from those who most needed it.

“We will investigate anyone who we think is fraudulently profiting from the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.”

A man has been found guilty of the murder of 24-year-old Seyyed Rasta Mir-Feyzi in Finchley last summer.

Another man has been found guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) in the same case.

[A] Haaris Rana, 22, (17.09.95), of Stainby Close, West Drayton, was found guilty of murder. He had already pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified.

[B] Yasir Ibrahim, 22, (30.10.95) of Maddison Close, East Finchley, was found guilty of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Both were found guilty by a majority jury at the Old Bailey on Friday, 9 February.

They will be sentenced at the same court on Wednesday, 14 February.

Police were called at 20:35hrs on Wednesday, 31 May 2017 to reports of a car in collision with a pedestrian in the car park of the Great North Leisure Park off High Road, Finchley.

The victim was assaulted during a fight involving a number of people in the car park. Shortly afterwards the car was deliberately driven at the victim.

Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

Seyyed was taken by London’s Air Ambulance to an east London hospital. He was pronounced dead on Thursday, 1 June 2017 at 18:00hrs.

A post-mortem examination took place on 5 June 2017 at Northwick Park Hospital Mortuary and gave the cause of death as catastrophic head injury.

The car – a white BMW – was abandoned at the location but Rana and Ibrahim fled the scene heading towards Finchley High Road.

They were arrested on 4 June 2017 and charged two days later.

Seyyed, from North Finchley, had completed his Bachelor of Science degree in computer network security at Westminster Univsersity shortly before his death.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes, from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “Rana’s use of his car as a murder weapon, in the same way that some people use knives, is one of the most repulsive attacks I have seen.

“He is a truly vicious person, who I’m extremely glad is off the streets.

“I hope that today’s conviction brings the family of Mr Mir-fayzi a measure of comfort.”

Mr Mir-Feyzi, Seyyed’s father, added: “Since my son’s death, the man responsible for his murder has also killed my family and me too. I feel like I have lost a part of my body. Knowing that he can never come back has left me and my wife broken.

“We donated our son’s organs and from this, parts of our son live on. Four people have the gift of life because of his death. We were informed that a man in his 30s received one kidney, a female in her 20s received the other, a man in his 30s received his liver and another man in his 40s received our son’s heart.

“It is terrible that his life was cut short in such an unnecessary way. He had a future, he wanted to join the Royal Navy or the Police. He had plans; he had an amazing life; he was loved and I know he would have gone on to do great things.”

Detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in Tottenham have made an arrest.

The 20-year-old man was arrested this afternoon (Friday, 9 February) on suspicion of murder; he remains in custody at a north London station.

An investigation was launched after police were called at approximately 01:28hrs on Saturday, 3 February, to St Mary’s Close, N17 to reports of a stabbing.

Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance and found a 22-year-old man suffering from fatal stab injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination held at Haringey Mortuary on Monday, 5 February gave cause of death as hypovolemic shock and multiple stab wounds.

Formal identification has taken place and the victim is Kwabena Nelson.

Detective Chief Inspector Luke Marks is leading the investigation. He said: “This investigation continues to move at pace but I would reiterate my appeal for anyone who heard or saw a road traffic collision or disturbance in Kemble Road and St Mary’s Close in the early hours of Saturday morning to come forward and speak to police.

“If you were there and have information or saw something please call us on the incident room on 020 8358 0200 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Enquiries are ongoing.

A man who stabbed a teenager to death outside a nightclub in Peckham has been jailed for his murder.

Dickson Tangu, 22 (04.10.95) of Wilkinson Gardens, Croydon, was sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 23 years, at Inner London Crown court today, Friday, 9 February.

Tangu was found guilty of murder and possession of a knife at the same court on Tuesday, 6 February.

Police were called at around 02:00hrs on 8 August 2017, to reports of a disturbance in the area of Ilderton Road and Old Kent Road, SE15.

Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service where they found 19-year-old Daniel Namanga suffering from a stab injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 02:05hrs.

A post-mortem examination was carried out later that day gave cause of death as single stab wound to the chest.

Daniel had been with friends at a club night at the Afrikiko Bar and as the event finished, he became involved in an altercation outside. This quickly escalated and Daniel was chased before being stabbed. He collapsed a few metres away. Tangu fled the scene.

Tangu was arrested at his home on the morning of 11 August 2017. He refused to answer any questions, and was subsequently charged with murder.

In a statement following Tangu’s sentencing, Daniel’s family said: “Thank God our prayers have been answered and justice has been served.”

Detective Sergeant Rob Tickle, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “Dickson Tangu chose to carry a knife that night and did so with the full intention of using it. He struck a singular, forcible and violent blow to Daniel’s chest. He never recovered from the injuries he suffered and sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he died at the scene.

“Tangu is a dangerous individual, embroiled in a culture of violence in which he has shown a complete disregard for human life, including whilst at court. The jury took just two hours to reach its verdict.

“I would like to pay tribute to the strength of Daniel’s family, in particular his mother, Sally, who has shown immense courage, dignity and strength throughout. The family particularly want to thank the emergency services personnel who fought hard to save Daniel’s life, the criminal justice system and the investigation team whose commitment, hard work and determination ensured that Tangu was convicted.”

Police made eight other arrests in connection with this investigation. They were all released with no further action

Police were appealing for information on the whereabouts of Alice Hart, 23, who was missing from Fulham.

Officers were called at 09:57hrs on Friday, 9 February to reports of a body of a woman found at a reservoir in Lonsdale Road, SW13.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

While formal identification awaits, Alice’s family has been informed of this development.

At this early stage in the investigation, the death is being treated as unexplained.

Police have arrested two teenagers after two police officers became injured while searching a suspect.

Three officers were in a fully marked police vehicle in Farmfield Road, Downham, when they spotted two teenagers who matched the description of suspects involved in an attempted burglary that happened nearby about 15 minutes earlier.

An 18-year-old male [A], and a 14-year-old male [B], were detained for the purpose of a search when [B] made-off on foot.

[A] then began struggling with officers and injured a male officer and a female officer in the process. The male officer’s hand was slashed by a knife during the struggle.

The officers, both attached to the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, were treated for their injuries at a south London custody suite. Neither required hospital treatment.

[A] was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, and grievous bodily harm. He was taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

Officers carried out a search warrant at an address in Bromley where they located [B]. He was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug. He was taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

Officers from Lewisham are investigating.Enquiries continue.

Temporary Chief Superintendent Robert Revill of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “This incident is a reminder of the dangers that police officers face on a daily basis while carrying out their duties protecting Londoners.

“Policing is by its very nature unpredictable – however no officer should be subject to such a violent attack.”

A man who deliberately drove a car into a person who had complained about noise at a party, hitting three of his own family members in the process, has been jailed.

Yasin Ahmed, 23 (03.09.94), of Florida Street, E2 was sentenced to six years and nine months’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 9 February after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving and three counts of assault at the same court on Wednesday 17 January.

Ahmed was also disqualified from driving for five years and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.

The court heard how on Monday, 7 August 2017, at approximately 20:15hrs, Ahmed was at a party on Gaverick Mews, E14 when a neighbour complained about the noise.

In an attempt to intimidate the neighbour, Ahmed got into a Ford Fiesta and reversed the car into the direction of the man.

He then turned the car around and drove into the neighbour at speed.

The victim, a man in his 40s from the Isle of Dogs suffered broken ribs while three of Ahmed’s family members received minor injuries from the ordeal.

Officers from Tower Hamlets arrested Ahmed on 8 August and he was charged the following day.

DC Michael Dixon of Tower Hamlets CID, who led the investigation, said: “Not only did Ahmed hit three of his own family members, mobile phone footage showed him being just feet away from hitting a number of young children too.

“Ahmed is incredibly lucky he did not kill someone. He is a dangerous individual and London is now a safer place with him off the streets and behind bars.”

Detectives are appealing for information following a serious collision on Merton Road junction with Lebanon Gardens, SW18, on Wednesday 7 February.

Police were called shortly after 20:43 hours to reports of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 80’s was taken to a south London hospital, where she remains in a stable condition, with serious leg injuries.

The male driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and assisted police, he was not arrested.

Detectives from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating. They would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision.
