NSA/CSS Employees Donate More Than $2M for 2023 Combined Federal Campaign

The 2023 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) concluded on January 12, 2024, with National Security Agency (NSA)/Central Security Service (CSS) affiliate contributions exceeded NSA’s goal of $1.9 million with over $2 million donated to 1,398 charities.

The CFC, led by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), enables federal employees and retirees to support people and communities in need across the country and around the world.

It is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, according to Barry Boseman, chief of State and Local Affairs.
NSA led donations in the mid-Atlantic region, which includes four states, Washington D.C., and 1,200 participating government agencies, Boseman said. The Department of Defense (DoD) total for the 2023 CFC was over $8.5 million, of which NSA contributed over 20%, and the nationwide total was $68.3 million.

“I’m incredibly proud of the contributions that our workforce made during this year’s campaign,” said Gen. Tim Haugh, Commander, USCYBERCOM, Director, NSA/Chief, CSS. “NSA remains committed to giving back to our local communities during the CFC and beyond.”

“The theme for the 2023 CFC was ‘Give Happy,’ as the CFC connected giving with happiness, showing that when federal employees give together, they are happier,” said Veronica Maylish Beckenstrater, NSA’s CFC program manager for the 2023 campaign.

William “Roy” Surrett, NSA’s lead CFC senior advocate, agreed. “Thank you again for ‘giving happy’ to important causes like helping communities recover from disasters, supporting military families, ensuring education for all, and more,” he said. “There is no better feeling than to help those in need here in our local area, across our Nation, and around the world.”

“The workforce’s dedication was vital to the success of the campaign and will bring help and hope to thousands of people as monetary and volunteer pledges go to support the missions of participating charities,” Maylish Beckenstrater said.

Keyworkers and senior advocates distributed marketing materials, spoke at town halls, and hosted events, including charity fairs, chili cook-offs, pet contests, painting parties, and bingo games to encourage the workforce to donate to causes that mean the most to them, she explained.

“It was innovative ideas like these that helped NSA exceed its goal this year and to show the community we care,” Maylish Beckenstrater added. “I can’t wait to see our workforce band together for next year’s campaign.”

Action to counter undeclared labour and tax fraud in Germany: five arrests

Source: Eurojust

11 October 2024|

Eurojust supported authorities in Germany, Croatia, Czechia and Italy to counter a long-term fraud with illegal or undeclared labour and tax evasion. During an action day, five suspects were arrested for allegedly running a network of building enterprises that employed labourers without paying taxes and social levies. In total, 47 places were searched in the four countries concerned.

The perpetrators set up three different building companies, mainly operating in and around the city of Münster in Germany, which did not pay taxes or social levies on the wages of their employees. To mask this fraud, a string of so-called service companies were set up in the Czechia, which supplied fake invoices. One of the suspects also functioned as alleged manager or administrator of some of the enterprises, to give the fraud an official front.

The fraud ran at least since 2019 and was uncovered by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Münster in North-Rhine Westphalia. At their request, Eurojust supported the recent action day, with the execution of European Investigation Orders in the four countries and provided legal assistance.

Operations were carried out at the request of and by the following authorities:

  • Germany: Public Prosecutor’s Office Münster; Main Custom Office Münster; Tax Investigation Münster
  • Croatia: County State Attorney’s Office in Rijeka
  • Czechia: Municipal Public Prosecutor’s Office Prague; Regional Police Directorate Prague, Economic Crime Unit; Regional Police Directorate České Budějovice, Economic Crime Unit
  • Italy: Public Prosecutor’s Office Trieste; Carabinieri Unit at Public Prosecutor’s Office Trieste

Ireland’s ‘Most Wanted’ arrested in United Arab Emirates

Source: Interpol (news and events)

LYON, France – One of Ireland’s most wanted fugitives, Sean McGovern, has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates following cooperation via INTERPOL.

The 38-year-old, an alleged high-ranking member of the Kinahan Organized Crime Group, was taken into custody by Dubai Police on Thursday 10 October.

The arrest follows the publication of an INTERPOL Red Notice, or international wanted persons alert, to support the ongoing collaboration between Irish and UAE authorities.

INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock said:

“One of Ireland’s most wanted individuals has been arrested thanks to the combined efforts of the Irish authorities and the United Arab Emirates.

“Cases like this underline the value of international police cooperation via INTERPOL’s global network, and again highlights that no fugitive can consider themselves safe from justice.

McGovern, who is wanted for charges including murder and directing an organized crime group, will be held in the UAE pending extradition proceedings.
