Bravery of officers lauded after residents rescued from fire in Willesden

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

The bravery of two officers, along with members of the public, has been lauded after they entered a burning building in Willesden to rescue occupants who were inside.

The incident unfolded at around 13:10hrs on Friday, 13 December after emergency services were called to reports of a fire in a three-storey building on High Street, NW10.

Officers were quickly on scene and immediately recognised the dangerous situation unfolding in front of them with smoke billowing from windows and reports of people still inside a flat on the first floor.

Two officers, along with members of the public, entered the building and made their way up to the first floor. They directed residents out of the building but were alerted to a man who was trapped in an upstairs flat. Utilising a ladder located in a courtyard area at the back of the building, a member of the public managed to break a window and help the man escape.

Thankfully no-one was seriously injured although three residents and one of the officers, who is aged in his 20s, were taken to hospital for treatment due to the effects of smoke inhalation. One officer remains in hospital and all are expected to make a full recovery.

The officers are being supported following the ordeal.

Commander Paul Trevers said: “The actions of these officers exemplifies the qualities that runs through the core of our officers in the Met police – bravery, tenacity and above all a desire to keep the public safe when faced with danger.

“Confronted with a terrifying situation and knowing that people were at risk they did not hesitate in going into that building to protect the lives of others. I am immensely proud of their actions as I’m sure all Londoners will be.

“I would also like to praise the courage of the members of the public who, alongside our officers, helped ensure the safety of those inside the building.”

Man jailed for murder of Julian Ebanks in Greenwich

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A man has been jailed after being found guilty of luring a young man to his death in south-east London.

Ishmaiel Kallon, 23 (12.03.01), of Kender Street, Greenwich, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years following a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, 13 December for his role in the murder of Julian Ebanks.

He was found unanimously guilty on Monday, 30 September following a four-week trial at the same court.

Julian, aged 20, was fatally stabbed on Kender Street in the early hours of 4 August 2023.

Homicide detectives carried out witness enquiries to track down the individuals responsible and, through analysis of mobile phone data, along with other intelligence, Kallon and another man were identified as the main suspects.

The court heard that Kallon had phoned Julian in the hours before the attack. It became clear that his intention was to lure Julian out into the open in Kender Street.

Julian was then stabbed by another man whilst Kallon acted as a ‘spotter’. Enquiries are still ongoing to locate the other man.

Julian had left London earlier in the year fearing for his life but had returned to attend a family member’s birthday party. He has only been back in London for 90 minutes before he was murdered.

Kallon never gave any explanation to why Julian was brutally murdered. However, analysis of Kallon’s devices showed that this attack was fuelled by a disagreement between the parties earlier in 2023.

Kallon was arrested on 10 August 2023 and appeared at Bromley Magistrates Court the next day charged with Julian’s murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Thorpe, who led the homicide investigation, said:

“Kallon is a dangerous individual, who had no qualms about luring another man to his death.

“Our thoughts of course remain with the loved ones of Julian – we know this has been an extremely difficult time and we will continue to offer them our full support.

“I am pleased that as a result of our investigation we have delivered justice for the Ebanks family by ensuring the person responsible for Julian’s killing will spend a considerable time behind bars.

“I would also like to commend the outstanding work of my team. Their incredible dedication and many long hours analysing CCTV and phone records meant that Kallon was identified and arrested only six days after the horrific attack.”
