Dartmouth — RCMP urging Nova Scotia motorists to help protect students by stopping for buses

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Students across the province are heading back to school this week and the Nova Scotia RCMP are urging motorists to be extra cautious during their daily commutes.

Nova Scotia law mandates that drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended.

“If you see a school bus stopped with its red lights flashing while you’re driving, you must stop, regardless of the direction you’re coming from,” says Insp. Don Moser, Nova Scotia RCMP Traffic Services. “Motorists have a responsibility to slow down and pay attention.”

Failure to stop for a school bus could result in a fine of $410 and six demerit points on your licence. For new drivers, 6 or more points results in a 6-month driving suspension. Drivers can also be charged for passing a school bus with amber warning lights flashing. The fine for failing to pass with caution is $295.

“We want every child to have a safe journey to and from school,” Becky Druhan, Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development said. “Student safety remains a top priority as students are heading back to class. We are asking community members to keep an eye out for one another, and to take extra caution on the streets, especially around schools.”

The Nova Scotia RCMP will be increasing patrols in the coming weeks to help keep roadways safe for students. Motorists are encouraged to avoid distractions, not drive while impaired, and prioritize the safety of students all year long.

Edmonton — Alberta RCMP remind drivers following the rules of road saves lives

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

During the Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP Traffic were out across the province enforcing traffic safety laws. From Sept. 1 to Sept. 4, 2023, Alberta RCMP issued 2,124 tickets.

Of the tickets issued, 1,124 were for speeding, 41 were for distracted driving, and 46 were for liquor and cannabis offences. Alberta RCMP also issued 50 tickets because people were not following one of the most basic safety precautions: wearing a seat belt.

“In a four-day period, we issued over 2,000 tickets; 2,000 tickets for what should, by this point, be common sense. Everyone knows the risks of speeding. Everyone knows the risk of driving under the influence,” said Insp. Chris Romanchych, Officer in Charge of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “The decisions to break the rules of the road is an extremely selfish one that does not consider how your choices may affect others. Saving a couple of minutes by speeding isn’t worth risking the lives of others. I would hope that people consider the cost of a cab as less than the cost of a life.”

Due to a combination of factors, including excessive speed, impaired driving, and improper use of safety equipment, there were five fatal motor vehicle collisions this past long weekend resulting in six fatalities.

Alberta RCMP reminds all Albertans that traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility. Plan ahead to ensure you have enough time to make it to your destination safely. Don’t get behind the wheel if you are planning to use drugs and alcohol. And stay off the roads if highway conditions aren’t optimal for you to travel.

Regina — Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan presents RCMP with new Guidon

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

On behalf of His Majesty King Charles III, His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty, S.O.M., M.S.M., Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, presented a new Guidon, the ceremonial flag, to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the RCMP Academy today.

The ceremony included a parade, and the consecration and formal presentation of the new Guidon. His Honour the Honourable Russ Mirasty and the RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme addressed those attending this historic event. The presentation of a Guidon for the first time in 50 years was the occasion to honour the service and dedication of duty to the Sovereign and to Canada by RCMP members past and present.

Staff, cadets, family, friends, dignitaries and RCMP members from across the country came together for this historic moment.

This presentation is significant as 2023 also marks the 150th anniversary of the RCMP.

The first RCMP Guidon was consecrated in 1935. It was retired in 1973, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the then-Honorary Commissioner of the RCMP, presented the second Guidon in Regina, Saskatchewan on the occasion of the RCMP’s 100th anniversary. Following the coronation of King Charles III, a new Guidon was approved. It is unique as the RCMP is the only police force in the Commonwealth to have been presented with Colours by the Sovereign.

The Guidon fosters pride in the history and traditions of the RCMP and honours the service of all RCMP employees, whether or not in uniform. The Guidon bears the RCMP’s Corps Operational Honours recognizing the RCMP’s participation in wartime and peace support operations. The new Guidon also has Corps Operational Honours for the Second World War 1939-45 which recognizes the RCMP’s contribution to the war effort overseas and at home, and Afghanistan 2003-14, as well as the Canadian Provost Corps 1939-45, Honorary Distinction for recognizing the service of Number 1 Provost Company (RCMP).

Following the presentation, the RCMP’s second Guidon was laid up with the original Guidon in a multi-faith service at the RCMP Chapel. Although they may be preserved under glass, Colours that are honourably retired are left to decay and disintegrate until they cease to exist.

Quote

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is honoured to have been presented with the third Guidon in our history. Today, as we focus on recruiting the next generation of law enforcement, modernizing our operations and workplace culture, this new Guidon truly represents our changing role and our pride in today’s RCMP.

RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme

The Presentation of the 3rd Guidon to the RCMP is available to watch on RCMP Depot Division’s YouTube channel.
