Inuvik — Inuvik RCMP partner with the Town of Inuvik to tackle ATV Safety

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Residents in Inuvik have expressed an increasing number of concerns about the operation of ATV’s in Inuvik. In response to these concerns, the Town of Inuvik and the Inuvik RCMP are partnering on a campaign to raise awareness, educate riders and enforce laws and bylaws relating to the operation of ATV’s.

Residents are reminded that legal operation of ATVs within town limits and on highways includes the rider having a valid driver’s licence, appropriate insurance and all riders and passengers wearing a helmet. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in fines or having your ATV impounded.

The safe use of roadways by all vehicles, including ATVs, is an important aspect of public safety and an important priority for the Town of Inuvik and the Inuvik RCMP. The RCMP will be out in the community to educate riders and enforce ATV regulations. The Inuvik RCMP are encouraging residents who witness unsafe ATV activity or ATV’s being operated by unlicensed minors, to call the police or the Town of Inuvik Municipal Enforcement Officers.

Anyone who needs to report activity related to unsafe ATV operation is asked to contact the Inuvik RCMP at 777-1111 or the Town of Inuvik Municipal Enforcement office at 867-777-8616. In the event of an emergency call, 911.

Yellowknife — Northwest Territories RCMP warn about consequences for drone use near firefighting efforts

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The Northwest Territories RCMP have received concerns from the Government of the Northwest Territories in relation to the use of drones near firefighting operations. The use of drones in areas where firefighting is taking place or on flight paths of firefighting aircraft presents a serious risk to fire crews and prevents the aircraft from being able to assist in firefighting efforts. The low altitude that firefighting aircraft need to fly at means that collisions with illegally operated drones is more likely than under normal flying conditions. The use of drones in firefighting areas will be investigated by the RCMP and fines range from $1000 for failing to comply with licensing and operating regulations to $3000 for putting people or aircraft at risk.

The RCMP would like to remind the public that the use of remotely piloted aircraft systems or “drones,” is regulated by Transport Canada and under the Canadian Aviation Regulations. These regulations include that the drone must be operated:

  • below 90 m above the ground
  • at least 30 m away from vehicles, vessels, and the public (if your drone weighs more than 250 g up to 1 kg)
  • at least 75 m away from vehicles, vessels, and the public (if your drone weighs more than 1 kg up to 35 kg)
  • at least 5.5 km away from aerodromes (any airport, seaplane base, or areas where aircraft take-off and land)
  • at least 1.8 km away from heliports or aerodromes used by helicopters only
  • outside of controlled or restricted airspace
  • at least 9 km away from a natural hazard or disaster area
  • away from areas where operation could interfere with fire fighters, police or first responders
  • during the day and not in clouds or smoke
  • within your sight at all times
  • within 500 m of yourself or closer
  • must be clearly marked with your name, address and phone number

Yellowknife — Yellowknife RCMP will be patrolling school zones as students head back to class

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

As school starts in the City of Yellowknife, students will be heading back to the classroom tomorrow. This means roadways in the city will be busier with students walking and riding bikes. Drivers are being reminded to slow down and pay particular attention to these backpack clad pedestrians.

Officers from the RCMP and the City of Yellowknife’s Municipal Enforcement Division, will be patrolling school zones and along bus routes. Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones and obey traffic controls on school buses. Driver’s traveling in both directions must stop when a school buses red lights are flashing as students boarding buses can come from both sides of the street.

This is also a good opportunity for parents to speak with kids about road safety. Pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert as they cross the street as vehicles can come from all directions, use crosswalks when possible and always obey walk lights. Staying “unplugged” by leaving phones and other handheld electronics in backpacks allows pedestrians to focus on the road, see, hear and respond safely.

We wish all students, teachers and support staff a fun, safe and successful school year.

The Yellowknife RCMP responded to a number of impaired driving related incidents in the city of Yellowknife over the weekend.

On September 9th, 2023, the Yellowknife RCMP were on patrol when a vehicle was noted to be driving erratically. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was asked to provide breath samples in a roadside screening device. The driver failed the test and was arrested for impaired driving and brought to the detachment where she failed to provide additional breath samples. The 34-year-old woman from Yellowknife was processed and released for a future court date as well as given a 24-hour suspension from driving.

Approximately three hours later in the early morning hours of September 10th, 2023, officers saw encountered the same woman driving in downtown Yellowknife. The woman was stopped and arrested a second time for impaired driving. The woman was brought back to the Yellowknife Detachment and provided samples of her breath that indicated that her blood alcohol content was over two times the legal limit. The woman is facing charges of impaired driving for each incident as well as driving while subject to a 24-hour suspension.

On September 11th, 2023 at 4:25 a.m., the Yellowknife RMCP received a report of collision near the Niven Lake access. RCMP officers attended and located a truck that had overturned and was severely damaged after leaving the roadway and colliding with the rock face. Officers checked the interior of the vehicle and determined that a male was trapped inside the vehicle. The man was extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This matter remains under investigation with the assistance of a traffic collision reconstructionist. Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in this incident.

Officers also issued a roadside suspension to another driver that was found to be under the influence of alcohol and responded to several other reports of impaired drivers. Impaired driving continues to be a significant issue in the Northwest Territories and is a preventable cause of injuries and deaths. Anyone who suspects a driver is impaired is asked to call 911.
