Iqaluit — Three women charged after investigation of fraudulent enrollment

Iqaluit RCMP has charged three Ontario based females in relation to a complaint of fraudulent enrollment into the Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporation (NTI) beneficiary list.

An investigation began earlier this year and it was found that between October 2016, and September 2022 the women were found to have applied for and obtained Inuit beneficiary status as adopted Inuit children, through Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporation (NTI).

The women used this Inuit beneficiary status to defraud the Kakivak Association and Qikiqtani Inuit Association of funds that are only available to Inuit beneficiaries by obtaining grants and scholarships.

On September 14, 2023 Karima Manji (59), Amira Gill (25) and Nadya Gill (25) were charged with 2 counts each of Fraud over $5000 contrary to Section 380(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Manji, Amira and Nadya Gill are scheduled in Iqaluit court on October 30, 2023.

Stephenville — Update: Man arrested by Bay St. George RCMP following robbery at Hi-Ball Bar & Billiards

Forty-year-old David Tapper was arrested last night by Bay St. George RCMP in relation to the robbery that occurred at Hi-Ball Bar & Billiards in Stephenville on September 19, 2023.

He was held in custody overnight and attends court today.

Tapper is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Robbery
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Disguise with intent

The Pas — The Pas RCMP arrest male after responding to a stabbing

On September 19, 2023, at approximately 7:00 pm, The Pas RCMP received a report from the hospital that there was a stabbing victim currently being treated.

Officers attended the hospital and spoke with the 40-year-old victim, who had been stabbed by a male known to her. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers located the 37-year-old male and he was arrested without incident.

He has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Fail to Comply x2.

He was remanded into custody.

New Albany — Annapolis District RCMP charge two men with weapons offences

Annapolis District RCMP charge two men for drug and weapons offences following a search of a home in New Albany.

On September 18, Annapolis District RCMP, with assistance of the Annapolis District Street Crime Enforcement Unit and Valley Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, executed a search warrant at a home on Hwy. 10 in New Albany as part of an ongoing investigation. Officers safely arrested one man at the home and began searching for a second man who was not located in the residence.

During the search of the home, officers seized two firearms, one of which was a loaded shotgun, bullets, a conducted energy weapon, and a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

On September 19, at approximately 11 a.m., the second man turned himself in at the Digby RCMP Detachment.

Annapolis District RCMP has charged 19-year-old Troy Benjamin Vanbuskirk, who was arrested at the scene, and 34-year-old Josh Abdul Brooks, both of New Albany, with:

  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
  • Possessing a Firearm while Prohibited (three counts)
  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Possession (methamphetamine)
  • Breach of a Release Order

Vanbuskirk appeared in Court and was remanded into custody. He’s scheduled to appear in Annapolis Royal Provincial Court on September 26 at 9:30 a.m.

Brooks appeared in Court and was released on conditions pending his next court appearance on October 31, at 9:30 a.m., at Annapolis Royal Provincial Court.

Yellowknife — Yellowknife RCMP respond to single vehicle motor vehicle collision on the Ingraham Trail

On September 18th, 2023, shortly after 6 p.m., the Yellowknife RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a single motor vehicle collision on the Ingraham Trail near Madeline Lake. RCMP officers were advised that the vehicle had left the roadway and that one of the occupants was trapped inside. RCMP and the Yellowknife Fire Division attended the scene and determined that there had been three occupants in the vehicle at the time of the collision. All three of the occupants suffered injuries in the collision that were not considered to be life threatening but all three occupants were transported to the hospital. RCMP later learned that one occupant was reported to have serious and potentially life altering injuries as a result of the collision.

This collision is still under investigation and alcohol and distracted driving are suspected to be factors.

Bible Hill — Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit investigating suspicious death

Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit is investigating a suspicious death that occurred in Bible Hill.

On September 17 shortly after midnight, Colchester County District RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death at a home on Wild Chance Dr. in Bible Hill. The victim is a 32-yer-old woman of Bible Hill, and her death is being treated as suspicious.

That morning, a 29-year-old Bible Hill man, known to the victim, was safely arrested at the Bible Hill RCMP detachment and later released.

At this time, investigators do not believe this was a random act and there’s no risk to the public.

The investigation, led by Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, is ongoing and being assisted by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Service and RCMP Forensic Identification Section.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this difficult time.

Moncton — Missing 32-year-old woman

The Codiac Regional RCMP is asking for the public’s help to locate a missing 32-year-old woman from Moncton, N.B.

Chelsey Desroches was last seen on September 7, 2023, near Assomption Boulevard in Moncton. She was reported missing to police on September 20, 2023. Police have followed up on several leads to try and locate her, but have so far been unsuccessful. Police and her family are concerned for her wellbeing.

Chelsey Desroches is described as being approximately five feet eight inches (173 centimetres) tall, and weighing approximately 134 pounds (61 kilograms). She has blue eyes and brown hair. No clothing description is available at this time.

North Battleford — Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes investigating suspicious death in North Battleford

On September 11, 2023, Battlefords RCMP received a report of human remains located near a forested area southeast of North Battleford. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation.

With the assistance of the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, Major Crimes has identified the deceased individual as 20-year-old Nitanas Scarlett, who was reported missing to Battlefords RCMP on August 7, 2023. Her family have been notified and Victim Services continues to be engaged to provide support.

Major Crimes continue to work diligently to determine the circumstances leading to Nitanas‘s death, which investigators have determined is suspicious in nature.

Nitanas was last seen on the 900 block of 102 Street in North Battleford the afternoon of July 4, 2023.

Broadview, Moosomin — Residents of Broadview/Moosomin area affected by Sasktel outage should go to local detachment if in need of police assistance

SaskTel is reporting a service outage that will affect portions of the Broadview and Moosomin detachment areas from midnight to 6 a.m. on September 21, 2023.

Landline services will be unavailable in and around the communities of Broadview, Cowessess First Nation, Kahkewistahaw First Nation, Marieval, Moosomin, Ochapowace First Nation, Zagime Anishinabek, Wapella, and Whitewood.

Wireless service will be impacted in and around Clayridge, Cowessess First Nation, Kahkewistahaw First Nation, and Ochapowace First Nation.

Internet services will be unavailable in and around the communities of Kahkewistahaw First Nation, Marieval, Ochapowace First Nation, Zagime Anishinabek, and Whitewood.

Macklin — Unity RCMP: two charged, firearms and illicit drugs seized after search warrant executed in Macklin

On September 14, 2023, Unity RCMP executed search warrants at two residences on Mirror Road in Macklin, SK as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.

In one residence, officers located and seized two long guns and a prohibited magazine. In the other, officers located and seized five firearms – two handguns and three long guns.

Additionally, officers located and seized suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, psilocybin, unidentified pharmaceutical-style drugs, drug trafficking paraphernalia and cash at the residences. Officers are working on identifying the drugs and totalling the amounts, as there were a significant number of exhibits seized during the search warrant.

Two individuals were arrested at the residences.

53-year-old Craig Kostiuk from Macklin is charged with:

  • two counts, possession for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • one count, possession, Section 4(1), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • five counts, unlicensed possession of a firearm, Section 91(1), Criminal Code;
  • two counts, unlicensed possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, Section 95(b), Criminal Code;
  • two counts, careless storage of a restricted firearm, Section 86(1), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, unlawfully sell, transport, distribute or possess unstamped tobacco product, Section 121.1(1), Criminal Code.

36-year-old Janelle McCullough from Macklin is charged with:

  • two counts, possession for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • two counts, possession, Section 4(1), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • two counts, unlicensed possession of a firearm, Section 91(1), Criminal Code;
  • one count, possession of a prohibited device, Section 91(2), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, careless storage of a restricted firearm, Section 86(1), Criminal Code.

They are scheduled to appear in court in Unity on November 20, 2023.

Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services, Luseland Police Department and Provost RCMP assisted in the execution of these search warrants.
