Stephenville — Bay St. George RCMP investigates suspected arson in Port au Port East, seeks public’s assistance

Bay St. George RCMP is investigating a suspected arson that occurred on a residential property on the Main Road in Port au Port East on January 4, 2025.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on January 4, police received the report. Upon police arrival, the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, was fully engulfed in flames with heat damage spreading onto the home. The blaze was extinguished by firefighters. Evidence gathered at the scene suggests that the fire was intentionally set. Suspect(s) were observed departing the area on an all-terrain vehicle at a high rate of speed.

The investigation is continuing.

Residents of Port au Port East are asked to check for available surveillance footage around the time of the fire. KM 1118 Alaska Highway — Motor vehicle collision closed Alaska Highway, vehicle occupants injured

January 5, 2025 at approximately 5:10 pm, Teslin RCMP responded to a report of a collision involving a pickup truck and an SUV on the Alaska Highway at KM 1118, approximately 130 km south of Teslin.

The traffic collision necessitated a coordinated emergency response from multiple agencies, involving the extraction of occupants from both vehicles due to the extent of the damage sustained. Emergency Medical Services and Volunteer Fire Departments from Watson Lake and Teslin, as well as Yukon Highways and Public Works, attended as part of the emergency response. The Alaska Highway was closed to both lanes of traffic for approximately three hours.

Five people were travelling in the pickup truck and were transported to hospital and treated for minor injuries. The lone occupant of the SUV was also more seriously injured and transported to hospital.

Temperatures at the time of the collision were around minus 25 degrees Celsius and the road surface was reported to be slippery.

Bible Hill — Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit investigating suspicious sudden death

RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime unit (NEN MCU) is investigating a suspicious sudden death in Bible Hill.

On January 3 at approximately 9:30 am, Colchester County District RCMP responded to a home on Bomber Drive as part of a wellbeing check and located a deceased 42-year-old woman and an unconscious man who was transported to hospital.

The investigation is being led by the NEN MCU and is being supported by the Colchester County District RCMP, Truro Police Service, RCMP Forensic Identification Services (FIS), and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service. There is no evidence at this time to suggest a risk to the public.

Pugwash — Man wanted on province-wide arrest warrant

Cumberland County District RCMP is seeking information on the whereabouts of a man currently wanted on a province-wide arrest warrant.

George Robert MacKenzie, 41, from Pugwash, is presently wanted for Assault, Forcible Confinement, Uttering Threats, and Mischief in relation to an incident that occurred on January 5 in Cumberland County.

MacKenzie is described as 5-foot-8, 180lbs. He has dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

Investigators have made several attempts to locate MacKenzie and are requesting assistance from the public.

Clarenville — Clarenville RCMP responds to report of suspected impaired driver; man arrested for impaired operation and unsafe storage of firearm

Following a report of a suspected impaired driver on January 3, 2025, a 65-year-old man was arrested by Clarenville RCMP for impaired operation and unsafe storage of a firearm.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. on January 3, Clarenville RCMP received the report of a possible impaired driver. A short time later, officers located the described vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway in Clarenville and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver, who showed signs of alcohol impairment, officers observed a firearm inside the vehicle that was not stored in a safe manner. The driver failed a roadside breath test and was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The firearm was seized. The man was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples over the legal limit.

The man’s vehicle was impounded and his license suspended. The driver was released to appear in court at a later date to face charges of impaired operation, impaired operation over 80 mgs%, and unsafe storage of a firearm.

RCMP NL thanks the public for continuing to report incidents of erratic or suspected impaired driving. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Sandy Point — RCMP charge man with attempted murder

Shelburne District RCMP has charged a man with Attempt to Commit Murder and related offences following a stabbing in Sandy Point.

On January 4, at approximately 9:05 p.m., RCMP officers and EHS responded to a weapons complaint at a home on Sandy Point Rd. Responding officers located a woman with significant injuries that had fled to a neighbouring residence.

The investigation indicates the 56-year-old woman of Sandy Point had been assaulted with multiple weapons by a man known to her. Officers learned that she had also been assaulted by the same man on January 3. No one else was inside the home at the time of either incident.

Officers located the suspect nearby a short time later, and he was safely arrested.

A search warrant was executed at the residence where the incidents occurred, in order to locate and seize further evidence. RCMP Forensic Identification Section is supporting the ongoing investigation.

Matthew James Jackson, aged 37, of Sandy Point, has been charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder (two counts)
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose (three counts)
  • Assault
  • Uttering Threats

Jackson was held in custody and had a first court appearance at Yarmouth Provincial Court on January 6, 2025.

Nain — Nain RCMP continues search for missing woman, Elizabeth Jararuse

Nain RCMP is continuing to look for 51-year-old Elizabeth Jararuse, who was last seen on December 30, 2024, in Nain.

On January 4, police received a report that Jararuse was missing. At that time, it was believed she was last seen on December 24, 2024. Police have since determined that Jararuse was last seen on December 30, 2024, in Nain, wearing a black toque, black cardigan, grey t-shirt, black pants, and black boots.

Over the past two days, Nain Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) conducted searches of various areas in the community using drones, however the woman remains missing. GSAR will continue to search the community today. Aerial searches are expected to take place once weather permits.

Ferryland — Ferryland RCMP investigates theft of skid-steer loader, seeks public’s assistance

Ferryland RCMP is investigating the recent theft of a skid-steer loader that was stolen from a property in Bay Bulls.

A 2022 John Deere 331G skid-steer loader with NL license plate number “XAX 442” was stolen from Island Cove Rd, in Bay Bulls, sometime between December 20, 2024, and January 4, 2025. Images of the stolen vehicle are attached.

The investigation is continuing.

Nain — Nain RCMP responds to snowmobile crash in Nain, impaired driver arrested

A 60-year-old man was arrested for impaired operation by Nain RCMP after crashing a snowmobile on January 4, 2025.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on January 4, Nain RCMP received the report of the crash on Bridge Road in Nain. The snowmobile, which was carrying multiple occupants, departed the road and went into a ditch. No one was injured. The operator of the snowmobile, who showed signs of alcohol impairment, was located and arrested at the scene. He was transported to the detachment where he refused to provide breath samples.

The man’s snowmobile was seized and his license suspended. He is facing charges of impaired operation and failure/refusal to comply with breath demand.

Impaired operation of any motor vehicle is a choice that unnecessarily places the driver and all others who share the roadway or trails at an increased level of risk. If you suspect an individual is driving while impaired, please immediately call your local police or 911 to make a report.

Brackley — PEI RCMP arrest three people and seize cocaine, methamphetamine

January 6, 2025, Brackley, Prince Edward Island – PEI RCMP Provincial General Investigation Section (GIS) traffic stop leads to seized drugs and the arrest of two men and a woman for possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.

On January 3rd, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m. PEI RCMP Provincial GIS with assistance from Queens District RCMP completed a targeted traffic stop in Brackley, PEI. RCMP arrested a 39-year-old Monticello man and a 26-year-old Stratford woman for possession of cocaine and methamphetamine, and a 37-year-old Cornwall man for possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and breaching a release order. A search of the vehicle located approximately 30 grams of cocaine and methamphetamine combined. The 39-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were released pending investigation and the 37-year-old Cornwall man was held, to be brought before Provincial Court. “Drug seizures large or small hold drug traffickers accountable helping to bring about safer Island communities. PEI RCMP remain committed to disrupting the flow of illegal drugs in PEI.” says PEI RCMP Media Relations Officer Corporal Gavin Moore.
