Fort McMurray — Alberta RCMP officer involved in shooting in Fort McMurray

On Dec. 12, 2024, at 5:32 p.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a disturbance at a residence on Siltstone Place in Fort McMurray. Officers attended, and while ensuring that everyone was safe in the residence, an altercation ensued, and an officer was attacked. As a result, the officer discharged their service weapon.

The suspect suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. One officer received minor injuries as a result of the altercation.

In compliance with legislative requirements, the director of law enforcement was immediately notified causing the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency, and in so doing, will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators. Events like this are difficult for everyone involved.

Glovertown — Arrest warrant issued for Brandan Bungay

Glovertown RCMP is looking to arrest 31-year-old Brandan Bungay who is actively evading police.

Bungay is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Assault – two counts
  • Unlawfully in a dwelling
  • Uttering threats

Bungay has been known to frequent the areas of Dover and Centreville, however, his current whereabouts are unknown.

Whitbourne — RCMP NL commemorates 60th Anniversary on-duty death of RCMP Constable Robert (“Bob”) Weston Amey

December 17, 2024, will mark the 60th Anniversary of the in line of duty death of RCMP Constable Robert (“Bob”) Amey who was one of two RCMP officers shot and killed while on duty in Newfoundland and Labrador.

On Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Anglican Church of Saint John the Baptist in Whitbourne, RCMP NL Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner Pat Cahill, joined by RCMP NL Chaplain and RCMP Members and Veterans, attended a memorial service in honour of Constable Amey, who was a parishioner at this very church.

Constable Amey, originally from Pondville, Nova Scotia, was only 24-year-old at the time of his tragic death and had joined the RCMP on March 1st, 1962.

Whitbourne was his second and final posting. He was laid to rest at the Anglican Churchyard in Arichat, Nova Scotia. Constable Amey’s name appears on the RCMP Honor Roll and Cenotaph at The RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Constable Amey paid the ultimate price while in the line of duty in an effort to protect the public and uphold the law. We thank him for his service.

Centreville  — 24-year-old woman sentenced in connection with drug trafficking investigation

A 24-year-old woman from Bloomfield (Carleton County), N.B., has been sentenced to 30 months in prison in connection with a drug trafficking investigation in Centreville, N.B.

On February 23, 2022, the New Brunswick RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime (FSOC) unit seized approximately two kilograms of crystal methamphetamine at a business on Malenfant Boulevard, in Dieppe, N.B., and began an investigation into the trafficking of illegal drugs.

On March 2, 2022, a then 21-year-old woman was arrested without incident at a business on Burtt Street, in Centreville. She was released pending a future court appearance.

On March 21, 2023, 24-year-old Bronwyn Barbara Thomas, appeared in Woodstock Provincial Court and was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine. She was later released pending a future court appearance.

On December 5, 2024, Bronwyn Barbara Thomas was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Upon her release, she will be subject to a ten-year weapons prohibition, and will be ordered to submit a DNA sample.

This investigation was the result of an operation led by the RCMP FSOC unit and supported by Canada Post Corporation.

Big River  — RCMP investigate theft of excavator

The Chaleur Region RCMP is asking for the public’s help to identify a person of interest following a theft in Big River, N.B.

On November 28, 2024, at approximately 2:20 a.m. an individual stole an excavator from a business on Route 430, in Big River. The suspect drove the excavator on the train tracks towards the Papineau First Nation, where it was later recovered.

A description of the individual is not available at this time.

Gander — RCMP East District GIS searches home in Carter’s Cove; drugs, firearms and cash seized, man arrested

A 26-year-old man was arrested by RCMP NL’s East District General Investigation Section (GIS) on December 11, 2024, following the search of a home in Carter’s Cove as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, RCMP officers from East District GIS, with assistance from Federal Policing – Eastern Region and Gander RCMP Detachment, attended the home located on Point Road in Carter’s Cove with a warrant, authorized under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, to search the property.

Inside the home police located and seized the following items:

  • 25 long-gun firearms
  • Ammunition
  • A prohibited weapon
  • More than 30 grams of cocaine
  • A quantity of crack cocaine
  • Approximately 650 pills of various substances
  • More than $10,000.00 cash
  • Other items consistent with possession for the purpose of drug trafficking

The man was arrested at the home without incident and was later released. The investigation is continuing with numerous firearms, drugs and weapons related charges anticipated.

Gimli — Gimli RCMP officer shot with replica firearm gun during disturbance call

On December 10, 2024, at approximately 4:40 pm, Gimli RCMP were called to a disturbance at a residence on 4th Avenue in Gimli.

When officers arrived on scene, they were advised that a 23-year-old male was in one of the back rooms of the residence and needed to be removed.

When they entered the room, there were two males in the room, one of them pointing a black pistol with the laser pointer activated.

Officers ordered the male holding the firearm to drop the weapon, at which point a scuffle broke out between the two suspects over the firearm. At that point, an officer who tried to intervene was fired at by one of the males with the replica firearm, striking him in the chest.

The officer was not physically injured and was able to get the suspect under control and was arrested at the scene.

A closer examination of the replica firearm determined that it was loaded with .43 caliber ball bearings.

Christian Carter, 23-years-old, from Gimli, was remanded into custody on the following charges:

  • Discharge Firearm with Intent
  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purposes x2
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Assault on Police Officer with Weapon
  • Resist/Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Uttering Threats Against a Person x 2

Plaster Rock  — RCMP seeking public’s help following theft of truck

The Perth-Andover RCMP is asking for the public’s help to locate a stolen truck from Plaster Rock, N.B.

The theft is believed to have occurred on November 27, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., at a business on Main Street in Plaster Rock.

The vehicle is described as a grey 2022 Dodge Ram, with New Brunswick licence plate CWV 266 and vehicle identification number 1C6R1C6RR7GT7NS204089. A photo of the truck is currently unavailable.

PEI RCMP stop12 impaired drivers this week, 2 yesterday

Yesterday at 8:00 p.m. RCMP received a 911 call reporting an erratic driver in Newton PEI. Prince District RCMP located the driver in Kinkora and arrested a 61-year-old man for impaired driving by alcohol. The Ontario man provided breath samples 2.5 times the legal limit.

In a separate incident, yesterday at 12:09 p.m. RCMP Traffic Services were conducting a checkpoint in Stanchel when a vehicle came through with the smell of fresh burnt cannabis coming from within it. A 41-year-old Kinkora woman failed a roadside test and was given a blood demand.
