Yarmouth County — Safe driving laws enforced on New Years Eve

RCMP Southwest Traffic Services Yarmouth has arrested two drivers after two incidents on New Years Eve in Yarmouth County.

On December 31st, 2024, at approximately 8:15pm, Southwest Traffic Services Yarmouth were conducting a checkpoint at the intersection of Hwy. 3 and Raynardton Rd. when a Jeep Compass was observed approaching eastbound at a high rate of speed. The officers at the checkpoint signaled for the vehicle to stop however it continued to drive eastbound and failed to stop at the checkpoint, narrowly missing an RCMP officer who was standing on the road at the time dealing with another driver.

The officers located the Jeep Compass moments later at the end of a dead-end road. The vehicle driver, a 27-year-old man from Carleton, was arrested for Impaired Operation of a Motor vehicle, Flight from Police, and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He was later released from custody with a first court appearance scheduled for March 3, 2025. The vehicle was towed.

Later at approximately 12:30am on January 1st, 2025, another RCMP Southwest Traffic Services Yarmouth member was patrolling the Argyle area when he observed a Dodge Dakota driving on the road at a very slow speed. The member conducted a roadside stop where an Approved Screening Device (ASD) was used, and the driver failed. The 63-year-old man from Glenwood was arrested for Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and then provided breath samples that were more than double the legal limit. He was released from custody and will have a first court appearance at a later date. His truck was also towed.

Anyone convicted of impaired driving will receive a criminal record, lose their licence for one year, and face a minimum fine of $1,000.

Prince Albert — Prince Albert RCMP: escaped prisoner charged after fleeing from police

Prince Albert RCMP was actively working to locate 29-year-old Glen Halkett, who escaped from the Prince Albert Penitentiary on December 31, 2024. The Correctional Service of Canada media release on this incident is available here.

On January 1 at approximately 11 a.m., officers were making proactive patrols in the community of Little Red River and observed Halkett in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, which was about to leave a residence.

They activated their emergency lights and approached the vehicle. It accelerated and sped past the police vehicle, striking the side of it. It then fled. The officers were not injured. The police vehicle was damaged.

Officers continued to search for Halkett. The suspect vehicle was later located, but Halkett was no longer with it.

As a result of continued investigation, Halkett is charged with:

  • one count, flight from peace officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code;
  • one count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Section 320.13(1), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, drive while prohibited, Section 320.16, Criminal Code.

He was previously charged with one count of escaping lawful custody, Section 145(1), Criminal Code and one count, being unlawfully at large, Section 145(1), Criminal Code, in relation to the escape from the penitentiary.

Saskatchewan RCMP is actively working to locate him and arrest him on these warrants.

Halkett is described as 5’8″ and 168 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He has a tattoo on his neck and under his left eye.

Officers observed him wearing a grey or light brown toque, a hoodie and a beige jacket.

A photo is attached but officers report his hair is longer than is depicted in it.

If you see Halkett, do not approach him.

Lower Sackville — RCMP arrest impaired driver in drive-thru

RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment has arrested a woman for driving with a blood alcohol level more than four times the legal limit.

On January 1 at approximately 3:23 p.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver at a business on Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. The caller reported that the driver of a Hyundai Sonata had bumped into the building and was now falling asleep behind the wheel.

An officer was in the drive-thru line ahead of this vehicle, and, with other responding officers, determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

The 28-year-old Middle Sackville woman was arrested for Impaired Operation of Motor Vehicle and later provided breath samples of 340mg% and 360mg%, more than four times the legal limit.

The driver was released from custody to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on March 17, 2025, and released to the care of a family member to ensure their wellbeing.

Kings County — RCMP charge 25-year-old Albion Cross man with attempted murder.

RCMP charge 25-year-old Albion Cross man with attempted murder.

Kings District RCMP with the assistance of RCMP Major Crime Unit have laid attempted murder charges on 25-year-old Owen Daniel MacDonald after a person known to him was seriously assaulted.

RCMP learned of an incident that occurred on November 28th that sent the assaulted person to hospital. After several days of investigation, police made an arrest and have charged MacDonald with the following charges:

  1. Attempted murder
  2. Aggravated assault
  3. Assault causing bodily harm
  4. Dangerous driving causing bodily harm
  5. Dangerous driving

He was held in custody and his next court appearance will be today in Georgetown. Police are not providing any further details at this time as this investigation may be subject to a publication ban.

Clinton — 73-year-old Stanley Bridge man arrested following fatal single vehicle crash

January 2, 2025, Clinton PEI – On January 1st, 2025 Prince District RCMP arrested a 73-year-old Stanley Bridge man following a single vehicle crash in Clinton that left one woman dead.

At approximately 16:30 on January 1st emergency responders attended the scene of a single vehicle crash on Route 6 in Clinton. Initial indications appear to show that an SUV failed to navigate a turn and went off the road into the ditch. A 70-year-old woman who was a passenger was pronounced deceased and a 73-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving. The driver remains in hospital with serious injuries; this investigation is ongoing. The New London Fire Department, and Island EMS assisted in this incident.

Whitehorse — RCMP investigate a homicide in Whitehorse

On January 1, 2025 at 3:40 pm police and Emergency Medical Services responded to a residence at 7th Avenue and Main Street and located a male who had been grievously injured. Emergency responders immediately provided first aid at the scene. Regrettably, the individual passed away from his injuries. A male suspect was quickly identified and has been arrested.

Yukon Major Crime Unit and additional RCMP units continue to investigate. There are areas in downtown Whitehorse that are being held by the police for further investigation. Police would like to advise there is no further threat to the public at this time. Police request that anyone who may have information to contact the Whitehorse RCMP 867-667-5555.

Sussex — Missing 39-year-old woman

The Sussex RCMP is asking for the public’s help to locate a missing 39-year-old woman from the community.

Robin Monks was last seen on December 30, 2024, around 10 a.m. on Maple Avenue in Sussex. She was reported missing to the police on December 31, 2024. Police have followed up on several leads to try to locate her but so far have been unsuccessful. Police and her family are concerned for her well-being.

Robin Monks is described as being approximately five feet three inches (160 centimeters) tall and weighing approximately 120 pounds (54 kilograms). She has brown eyes and long brown curly hair. She was last seen wearing a brown coat, however, no other clothing description available at this time.

Moncton — Two men die following single vehicle crash

A 33-year-old man and a 24-year-old man have died following a single-vehicle crash into Halls Creek in Moncton.

On December 31, 2024, at approximately 9:17 a.m., members of the Codiac Regional RCMP, the Moncton Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in the river next to Church Street and Clement-Cormier Street in Moncton. A 33-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were found deceased inside the vehicle.

A New Brunswick RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist, a member of the New Brunswick Coroner’s Office, and the General Investigations Section of the Codiac Regional RCMP are assisting with the investigation.

Autopsies have been scheduled to determine the men’s exact causes of death.

St. John’s — RCMP NL warn of scammers selling items on Facebook

RCMP NL is warning residents of a type of scam currently in circulation where scammers are using Facebook to sell items for cheap and steal victim’s money.

Recently, reports have been made about a scam where Facebook profiles are selling items for cheap, giving out an address that is not theirs, requesting and receiving the money via email money transfer (EMT), then blocking the people scammed. See the attached photos for examples of what these scams may look like. They can appear in community buy and sell Facebook Groups, your Facebook Feed, or on Facebook Marketplace. They may come from different Facebook profiles and the listings may vary.

The RCMP is advising residents to never pay for merchandise before receiving it. Keep in mind: if it’s too good to be true, it often is. RCMP NL asks the public to discuss this type of scam with elders or vulnerable people in their family or community.

Shubenacadie — RCMP investigating fatal house fire

East Hants District RCMP is investigating a fatal house fire that occurred in Shubenacadie.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on December 31, East Hants District RCMP and fire services responded to a report of a house fire on Hwy. 215 in Shubenacadie. Two occupants of the home, a 65-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, safely exited the home and were not injured. The third occupant of the home, a 73-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time, however, investigators continue to gather information and evidence.

The investigation is being assisted by the Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal, the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service, Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime and RCMP Forensic Identification Services.
