On February 8, 2021, a 38-year-old male inmate at the Regina Correctional Centre went into medical distress and was later declared deceased. The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety’s original media release is available here.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section investigated the male’s death in consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
Investigation determined an adult male provided cocaine to the deceased prior to him going into medical distress.
As a result of further investigation and consultation with Crown prosecutors, on January 6, 2025, 42-year-old Mitch Schoffer from Moose Jaw was charged with one count, manslaughter, Section 236(b), Criminal Code and one count, trafficking cocaine, Section 5(1), Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.
He appeared in Regina Provincial Court on January 20, 2025.
