So far this month, Fort Liard detachment has laid seven impaired driving charges, an unusually high number for a community of this size. Two of the charges were laid during the national traffic safety initiative, Operation Impact.
Three of these charges were laid against a single driver, who was caught three separate times in the span of two weeks, each time providing breath samples in excess of twice the blood alcohol limit. In one of these matters, the driver struck a marked RCMP vehicle with his ATV, which has since been seized along with his licence. The 35-year-old Fort Liard man will attend court on November 20th, 2024 in Fort Liard.
As impaired driving remains a leading cause of criminal death in Canada, these numbers are disappointing to see.
The RCMP reminds the public that all motorists, regardless of whether they drive ATVs or full-size vehicles, can be subject to mandatory alcohol screening when stopped by police.
