On August 14, ICITAP conducted a joint meeting with the leadership of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The primary focus of this meeting was to discuss the existing and upcoming staff training courses, as well as proposed programs for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL). Additionally, the conversation addressed critical challenges, particularly the ongoing repairs at various facilities, which are targeted for completion by the end of the year. The discussion also highlighted budgetary constraints that are impacting the acquisition of necessary furniture and fixtures, which are essential for the proper functioning and comfort of the facilities. Following the meeting, was a toured to the new Metro Manila District Jail – Main (MMDJ-MAIN) facility. During this tour, representatives from UNODC and ICITAP provided expert recommendations on enhancing the safety and security measures of the jail before its official opening. Their insights were instrumental in ensuring that the facility meets the highest standards of safety and security, which are crucial for both staff and PDLs. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the BJMP, ICITAP and UNODC in addressing the challenges and advancing the mission of improving jail management in the Philippines.
