In light of a number of recent arsons believed to have been set by youth in the community, Natuashish RCMP and Mushuau Innu First Nation Fire Department conducted a presentation on fire safety to a group of youth during a Sunday School session held on September 1, 2024.
Police and firefighters responded to multiple reports of fires in Natuashish over this summer. Last week, a youth was arrested in relation to a number of arsons that occurred within the community. The youth was released from custody and is set to appear in court at a later date.
Fires have continued to be a problem in the community and the RCMP is continuing to investigate each incident.
During the presentation, the youth learned about fire safety and the devastating impacts that fires can have on the community, including serious injuries or the loss of life, as well as the destruction of properties, including homes and businesses. Following the presentation, presenters joined the youth in a prayer session and enjoyed sharing a cake that was graciously provided by the church as a means of thanking officers for their work in the community.
Natuashish RCMP asks residents to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activities to police.
Anyone having information about recent fires in the community is asked to contact Natuashish RCMP at (709) 478-8900. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers: #SayItHere 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com or use the P3Tips app.
