On March 25, 2024, at approximately 3:20pm, Whitehorse RCMP received a call of a person possibly carrying a weapon in the area around Fourth Avenue and Alexander Street, in downtown Whitehorse. Police attended the area immediately in order to attempt to locate the person and assess the risk level.

Out of an abundance of caution, police recommended that an elementary school in the area should be placed in hold-and-secure status. This means that there is an emergency or high-risk situation outside, and it is not related to the school itself.

After investigating the call further, police contacted the school to clear the hold-and-secure status after approximately fifteen minutes. Although the investigation is ongoing, officers believe that the item initially reported to be a weapon by the caller was not a weapon and was not being used in a threatening manner. There were no arrests.

Police appreciated cooperation from the school and the public as they followed up on this call.
