Just in the month of December, PEI RCMP responded to 39 calls relating to impaired driving.
With a strong presence on Island roads, particularly over the Holiday period, PEI RCMP have charged at least 12 drivers with impaired operation of a vehicle offences, while 3 other incidents are still under investigation. As it is still very early in the month, there are still other cases pending before the courts that will result in other outcomes that may increase these numbers.
“Regrettably, December was also a very tragic month because of impaired driving on Island roads,” said Superintendent Kevin Lewis, Acting Commanding Officer, PEI RCMP. “Anyone driving on PEI needs to take note that RCMP enforcement efforts mean the chances of you getting caught if you drive impaired are very high,” added Lewis.
Superintendent Lewis reminds motorists the public are playing a big part in helping get impaired drivers off Island roads. PEI RCMP can definitely say that calls from the public are a significant factor in leading police right to impaired drivers. “We are truly grateful to all those who called 9-1-1 to report a suspected impaired driver, and we encourage everyone to call in if they see what appears to be an impaired driver,” added Lewis.
Between December 29, 2023 and January 1, 2024, PEI RCMP conducted some 25 check stops across the Island.
