December 18, 2023, Alberton PE – On December 17, at 5:00 PM West Prince RCMP responded to a report of counterfeit currency found along the road on Main Street Alberton. Hundreds of notes were seized including $100, $50 and $20 notes. All of these notes are identifiable as counterfeit as they have Chinese characters on them. Police have not received any reports of anyone passing these counterfeit notes.

Anyone in the area who handles currency in the course of their business or work is alerted to be on the lookout for suspicious currency and should they come into contact with it, report it to police. If you unknowingly accept counterfeit currency as legal tender, you cannot be reimbursed.

Advice on dealing with counterfeit currency from the Bank of Canada:

  • Politely refuse the note and explain that you suspect that it may be counterfeit.
  • Ask for another note (and check it too).
  • Advise the person to check the note with the local police.
  • Inform your local police of a possible attempt to pass suspected counterfeit money.
  • Be courteous. Remember that the person in possession of the bill could be an innocent victim who does not realize that the note is suspicious.

If you think you have come across counterfeit currency contact your local police.
