Quick action by an RCMP Police Dog Services team has saved a 60-year-old man that was lost in the woods in Bartholomew, N.B.

On November 5, 2023, at approximately 11 a.m., members of the Northeast District RCMP responded to a call for service regarding a 60-year-old man who was lost in the woods. The man, along with two others, had been involved in a side-by-side collision the evening prior, and had gotten stuck in the woods overnight. The two other individuals were able to make it out of the woods to call for help, but had to leave the 60-year-old man behind as he was unable to walk.

Northeast District RCMP members, along with assistance from RCMP Police Dog Services and members of the Department of Justice and Public Safety, began searching for the man in the woods. Within minutes, police dog Lex and his handler, Cpl. St-Amand, picked up a scent and were able to track and quickly locate the man, who was found to be in medical distress and was transported to hospital.

“In situations like this when time is of the essence, we rely very heavily on our police dogs and handlers,” says Sgt. Jason LeBlanc with the Northeast District RCMP. “The quick work by Cpl. St-Amand and police dog Lex undoubtedly saved this mans life.”

The RCMP wishes to thank our frontline RCMP members, our RCMP Police Dog Handler, the emergency staff and our partners with Justice and Public Safety for assisting in bringing this to such a successful conclusion.
