On October 6, 2023, at approximately 8:10 am, RCMP responded to a break-in at a rural residence, in the RM of Portage la Prairie.
The homeowners, who have video surveillance, saw a suspicious person on their property, attempting to steal an all terrain vehicle.
Officers responded immediately and a male was located walking along Highway 16. When officers stopped, the male fled into an adjacent field and into a ravine area.
The area was contained and Police Dog Services attended. Police Service Dog, Jolt, tracked the suspect and he was located approximately 100 meters from the road, hiding in several feet of long grass. The suspect resisted arrest, but was eventually taken into custody.
The suspect was seen carrying a bag when he fled, so PSD Jolt searched the field for any discarded articles and located a bag containing a laptop.
A 17-year-old male from Brandon was charged with Resisting Arrest x2 and Break and Enter. He was also WANTED on an outstanding warrant out of Brandon.
He was released from custody on a release order with conditions.
Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
