BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Burnaby

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Burnaby where one person has died.

On January 13, 2026, at 7:39 p.m., the Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a woman in distress at a residence located in the 4100-block of Oxford Street.

Burnaby RCMP arrived on scene and spoke to the complainant who had left the residence for their own safety. Police then proceeded to the residence where they made contact with the woman who was reportedly in possession of weapons. Very shortly after making contact with the woman, an interaction occurred in which shots were fired. Officers provided immediate medical assistance to the woman until paramedics could arrive; however, she was pronounced deceased at the scene despite the life-saving efforts.

No one else sustained injuries as a result of the interaction.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
