The RCMP-led Toys for the North program occurs thanks to the collaborative effort of community and corporate partners. Each year, 4,500 children who reside in northern communities, receive a toy that is delivered by RCMP employees.
Toys are obtained by the Canadian Toys Association, and are collected and sorted by Thomson Terminals (Toronto) and sorted and loaded on a transport trailer truck where they make their way to 8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base Trenton. From there, when operationally feasible, the toys are transported by the Royal Canadian Air Force to the appropriate northern coordination points. RCMP volunteers from the detachments work with their community partners and distribute the toys into the hands of a child.
This year, the communities of Teslin and Haines Junction participated in the program.
“I think it’s a great initiative, and thank all of those whose generosity and time make this happen. It is certainly a welcome addition when pockets might be stretched during the holiday season and it was a great opportunity to meet with local children and youth.” Corporal Shannon Stelter, Detachment Commander, Haines Junction Detachment
“With the assistance of Teslin Tlingit Council, we informed the community that some toys had accidentally fallen from Santa’s sleigh, and were recovered near a trap line. The children were invited to come by the detachment to select a present. It was fun to build a little story around the toys and even better to see the kids pick a gift for themselves.” – Constable Corey Joudry, Acting Detachment Commander, Teslin Detachment
