News release
On the evening of January 4, 2025, Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes located and arrested an adult male in relation to the death of 30-year-old Melanie Asham-Obey from Pasqua First Nation. The adult male was arrested in Regina with the assistance of Regina Police Service.
As a result of continued investigation, 40-year-old Robin Kaiswatum was charged with one count, second degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code.
Robin Kaiswatum appeared in Regina Provincial Court on January 6, 2025.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes investigating suspicious death

On January 2, 2025 at approximately 8:15 a.m., Southey RCMP received a report of an injured female at a residence on Piapot First Nation.
Southey RCMP immediately responded and located a deceased adult female at the residence. She has been identified as 30-year-old Melanie Asham-Obey from Pasqua First Nation. Her family has been notified and victim services made available to them.
The female’s death is considered suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation and continue to investigate.

Investigators advise there will be an increased police presence on Piapot First Nation for an undetermined amount of time.
