Whitehorse — Update: Yukon RCMP lay charges into Whitehorse home explosion

On November 14, 2023 around 5:30 am, the Whitehorse RCMP responded to reports that there had been a home explosion on Bates Crescent, Whitehorse. Police attended the scene to find little remaining of the home and damage done to neighboring properties. One person died as a result of the explosion.

The Yukon Major Crime Unit conducted a highly complex and technical investigation into the explosion. The RCMP utilized multiple agencies from outside the territory to assist with various stages of the investigation including the initial scene examination and extensive testing.

The RCMP has laid two charges under sections 5(1) and 7(a) of the Yukon Gas Burning Devices Act against the home owner of the residence that exploded.

Timothy Preston was charged on November 7, 2024 and a court date has been set for January 7, 2025.

This matter is now before the courts and no further information will be provided.
