Yukon RCMP would like to remind motorists that students around the Yukon are returning to school next week, this means local traffic volumes are expected to increase. Plan extra time for commuting and be aware of posted speed limits, school zones are 30 km/hr zones. Maintaining lower speeds allows motorists more time to react to unexpected situations resulting in increased safety for everyone.
School buses will be stopping on the roadway to pick up children. It is an offence under the Yukon Motor Vehicles Act to pass a school bus when it’s red lights are flashing. Please be on the lookout for children and youth near roadways who are walking, crossing the street or riding bicycles.
“It is crucial to prioritize safe driving. We all play a role in road safety, with increased foot traffic around schools and more young people on the roads, being vigilant and cautious can create a safer environment for everyone.” – Constable David Andrews, Community Policing Services, Whitehorse Detachment
