Yellow Quill First Nation — Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes: male charged with second degree murder

On August 18, 2024 at approximately 5 p.m., Rose Valley RCMP received a report of an injured person at a residence on Yellow Quill First Nation.

Officers immediately responded and located an injured adult female. She was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. She has been identified as 24-year-old Terrance Tony-Kishayinew from Yellow Quill First Nation.

An adult male was arrested at the scene in relation to her death.

Investigation determined he’d assaulted a second adult individual, who did not report injuries to police.

As a result of continued investigation by Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes, 26-year-old Cole Smokeyday from Yellow Quill First Nation is charged with:

  • one count, second degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code;
  • one count, assault, Section 266, Criminal Code; and
  • one count, uttering threats, Section 264.1(1)(a), Criminal Code.

He is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on August 20, 2024.
