Thirty-four-year-old Colby Powell was arrested on August 10, 2024, by Sheshatshiu RCMP after he evaded a traffic stop, struck a police vehicle and fled from police.
On August 10, Sheshatshiu RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle in North West River. The car failed to stop for police and side-swiped the police vehicle. The car fled from police and was located abandoned a short time later in Sheshatshiu. The driver, Powell, was quickly located and showed signs of drug impairment. He was arrested and refused to comply with a demand as part of an impaired driving investigation. During the arrest, two police officers were assaulted.
Powell was remanded into custody over the weekend and is charged with the following criminal offences:
- Dangerous operation
- Flight from police
- Operation while impaired by drug
- Fail to comply with a demand
- Obstructing a police officer
- Assaulting a police officer – two counts
In addition, he was ticketed for a number of traffic offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
Powell appeared in court on Monday and was released by the court on a number of conditions. His next court appearance is August 29, 2024.
