The Southeast District RCMP is currently investigating the sudden death of an individual as a drug overdose related to an extremely dangerous substance circulating in the region.
On July 25, 2024, the Richibucto RCMP was made aware of a sudden death in Jardinville. Through the course of the investigation, police determined that the individual’s death is likely related to the use of a drug believed to have been purchased in Elsipogtog First Nation, N.B.
The drug is believed to contain carfentanil, a synthetic opioid that is significantly stronger than fentanyl, possibly in a blue or green powder form.
“We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution and avoid purchasing or consuming any drugs that may be circulating in the region, says Inspector Maxime Babineau of the Southeast District RCMP. “The health and safety of those we serve remains our top priority. Our thoughts are with the deceased’s family, friends and community.”
The use of Naloxone may help reverse the effects of the drug, although repeated administration of Naloxone may be required to counter the overdose effect. The New Brunswick RCMP wants the public to be aware of carfentanil, and be reminded that possession of this substance is an offence.
