Six individuals are under investigation by various RCMP detachments in this province following traffic stops that were conducted this past weekend, between June 7-9, 2024.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, Gander RCMP responded to a single-vehicle crash in Musgrave Harbour. The driver, a 41-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment and failed a roadside breath test. Following his arrest, further breath samples were obtained back at the detachment that were above the legal limit. The man faces charges of impaired driving.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m., Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP were dispatched to an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash on a dirt road in Codroy. The operator of the ATV, a 24-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment. At the hospital, a blood demand was provided and samples of the man’s blood were collected. Police await the results of the blood samples to determine if charges of impaired operation are appropriate.
Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Kelland Drive in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. A vehicle struck a power pole causing extensive damages to the pole. The driver, a 36-year-old woman, failed to provide roadside breath samples. She now faces charges of impaired operation and refusing to comply with a roadside breath demand.
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Whitbourne RCMP received a report of a suspected impaired driver at a commercial property in Whitbourne. Officers located the described vehicle and observed that the driver, a 57-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested. At the detachment, the man provided breath samples that were three times the legal limit. He faces charges of impaired driving.
Later that evening, at approximately 10:45 p.m. in Stephenville, Bay St. George RCMP responded to a single-vehicle crash on Mississippi Drive. The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man, exited the vehicle and fled on foot prior to police arrival. RCMP Police Service Dog Thor and his handler attended the area, conducted a track and located the driver hiding in a wooded area. The man was arrested and was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples that were above the legal limit. He faces charges of impaired driving.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Burin Peninsula RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Route 220 in Fortune. A vehicle, with three occupants, one of which was a child, had departed the roadway. The driver, a 44-year-old man, was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. A blood demand was provided and samples of the man’s blood were collected. Police await the results of the blood samples to determine if charges of impaired operation are appropriate. The two passengers in the vehicle received minor injuries.
Where appropriate, licence suspensions were issued and vehicles were seized and impounded.
