A 49-year-old man from Burton, N.B., has been charged in connection with a vehicle-related fraud investigation in Richibucto Road, N.B.

In 2021, police received a number of reports of possible frauds that occurred at DMR Auto Sales between January 2020 and September 2021. The fraud involved customers trading in vehicles that still had an outstanding balance remaining on them. The vehicles were sold to new owners without the balance being paid off, leaving the original owners with payments for both their new and old vehicles.

On November 21, 2023, police arrested a 49-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman in connection with the investigation. Both individuals were later released.

On March 28, 2024, Brent Hayward Stewart was charged with 26 counts of fraud over $5,000, and one count of theft over $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in Fredericton Provincial Court on April 2.

The investigation is ongoing.
