On March 10, 2024, at approximately 11:15 pm, Berens River RCMP received a report that a male had been shot. Officers attended to the Nursing Station immediately and found an injured 37-year-old male who had been shot multiple times. The male was transported to Winnipeg hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Investigation determined that the victim had been in a vehicle with a 32-year-old female driver and a 30-year-old male when an argument broke out. The male exited the vehicle and shot the victim. The victim then exited the vehicle and was left on the road while the suspect and female driver fled the scene.

The victim was found and taken for medical treatment.

Shortly after, officers received a report that the same suspect had attended a residence in the community. He caused a disturbance and then left and shot at the house. Three people were in the house and were uninjured, but the shots hit the walls in several rooms in the house.

On March 19, 2024, Mario Semple of Berens River was arrested and charged for 16 weapons and assault charges. He remains in custody. The investigation continues.
