Yukon RCMP arrested two people on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, related to an investigation involving weapons. One was held for court while the other was released without charges.
During the morning of January 23, 2024, the Yukon RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) located a stolen vehicle in downtown Whitehorse. Police were aware of additional incidents potentially involving weapons related to this vehicle, and in order to ensure public safety, the Yukon RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), and Yukon RCMP Police Dog Service (PDS) were engaged to ensure the safe arrest of suspects associated to this vehicle.
At approximately 3:30pm, police safely arrested Nicholas Rear, age 26 of Whitehorse, outside of a business in downtown Whitehorse. In addition to prior warrants, Mr. Rear is facing the following new charges:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code;
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, section 5(2) Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.
Mr. Rear was held for a first court appearance at Whitehorse Territorial Court on January 24, 2024.
During a search of the vehicle and a hotel room associated to Mr. Rear, police located two replica firearms as well as evidence to support charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. The replica firearms were seized by police. As the file is currently before the courts, further information will not be provided.
One other person was arrested but has been released without charges. Their name will not be shared.
