East Prince RCMP have arrested two impaired drivers in Prince County over the past two days.

Just after 2:00 in the morning on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 East Prince RCMP stopped a 31-year-old female driver for speeding. The officer noted a strong smell of alcohol from the woman and administered a road-side breath test. Having failed this test, the woman was arrested and taken to the East Prince RCMP detachment where she again provided breath samples, both of which were over 200 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol. The woman’s vehicle was also impounded.

Just after 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023 the same officer stopped a second vehicle for a sobriety check. The 24-year-old male driver again had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and the officer performed a road-side breath check, which the driver failed. The driver was then arrested and also taken to the East Prince detachment where he failed a second breath test.

Both drivers will appear in court at a later date.

“It is unfortunate we continue to see these occurrences on Island roads. It is obvious that some drivers are not getting the message and putting others at risk by driving impaired. I encourage everyone to report impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 to keep Islanders safe” says Superintendent Kevin Lewis, Acting Commanding Officer for the RCMP in PEI. “I want to thank our RCMP officers and officers of other police services that are working to get impaired drivers off the streets. Islanders can continue to expect a significant RCMP presence on our highways,” adds Lewis.

PEI RCMP remind everyone to plan ahead if you are going to be consuming alcohol or cannabis – have a designated driver, call a friend, call a cab, or stay where you are until you are able to drive safely.
