Portage la Prairie — Portage la Prairie RCMP investigating use of counterfeit US currency

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

On December 15, 2023, at 1:15 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a suspect having purchased goods at a business, located on Saskatchewan Avenue in Portage la Prairie, using counterfeit US currency.

Officers were advised that a male suspect entered the store a few hours earlier and produced the $100 bank note and completed a purchase. Upon closer inspection, the cashier suspected it was a counterfeit and notified police. The suspect had already left the store.

This counterfeit US banknote looks authentic but the texture and feel of the paper is what alerted staff to its potential of being counterfeit.

RCMP believe other businesses may be targeted and urge those accepting $100 US bank notes to examine them carefully.
