Yellowknife — Northwest Territories RCMP Weekend Summary – October 20th, to October 23rd, 2023

The Northwest Territories RCMP responded to approximately 290 calls for service between Friday (October 20th) at 6:00 p.m. night to this morning (October 23rd) at 8:00 a.m.

Impaired Driving – Yellowknife

On October 20th, 2023, the Yellowknife RCMP were on patrol and located a vehicle that was driving erratically. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the vehicle kept driving at a low rate of speed. Officers were able to get the driver to pull over eventually and found a 48-year-old man form Yellowknife in the driver’s seat. The man showed signs of impairment by alcohol and was arrested before the being brought back to the detachment to provide breath samples. The samples showed that the man’s blood alcohol content was almost four times the legal limit. Impairment at this level grossly affects motor skills, reaction time and cognition. Its is very lucky that no one was injured as a result of this incident.

Motor Vehicle Collision – Yellowknife

On October 21st, 2023, The Yellowknife RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on the Ingraham Trail. RCMP arrived and found the Yellowknife Fire Division was already on scene and was extracting the lone occupant of the vehicle. The man was taken to hospital for treatment and the extent of his injuries are unknown to police. The cause of the collision is still under investigation but an initial examination on scene supports that the vehicle rolled after entering a ditch at speed. Evidence recovered from the scene suggests that alcohol may have been a factor in this incident and investigators are working to determine if the driver was impaired.

Aggravated Assault – Yellowknife

On October 22nd, 2023, at 2:54 am, the Yellowknife RCMP were called to an apartment building in downtown Yellowknife to respond to a complaint of a person being passed out. RCMP attended and located a man who was sleeping in the lobby. As RCMP were dealing with the man, they noticed that he had a serious injury to his ear. The man indicated that he had been assaulted but was unable to recall the details of the incident or the location that it had occurred. EMS were called and took the man to the hospital for further treatment. The incident is still under investigation.

This weekend’s summary is Yellowknife centric however officers throughout the territory responded to a number of calls. The RCMP typically, does not report on individual cases of domestic violence, mental health calls or sexual assaults. These incidents occur throughout the territory and officers respond and investigate. The largest number of occurrences by type that officers responded to throughout the territory were mischief complaints. This categorization of occurrence includes things like damage to property, unwanted or disruptive people at businesses and unwanted house guests.
