Red Earth Cree Nation — Carrot River RCMP: male charged after serious assault and robbery

On October 24, 2023 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Carrot River RCMP received a report of a robbery on Red Earth Cree Nation.

Investigation determined an adult male assaulted a victim and stole their vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious in nature.

Officers immediately began patrolling to locate the stolen vehicle. Investigation determined it was seen on Highway #123, travelling toward Cumberland House. Officers from Cumberland House RCMP attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle continued on.

Officers then set up a tire deflation device and the stolen truck was disabled. The driver ran from the vehicle but officers arrested him a short distance away.

As a result of subsequent investigation, 26-year-old Austin McGillivary from Cumberland House is charged with:

  • one count, robbery, Section 344, Criminal Code;
  • one count, aggravated assault, Section 268(2), Criminal Code;
  • two count, theft of credit card, Section 342(1), Criminal Code;
  • one count, flight from peace officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code;
  • one count, resist/obstruct peace officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code;
  • one count, operation of a conveyance while impaired, Section 320.14(1)(a), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, operation of a conveyance while prohibited, Section 320.18, Criminal Code.

He is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on October 26, 2023.
