PEI RCMP have launched an online crime reporting (OCR) tool providing the public another option to report certain types of non-emergency crime. The OCR tool can be found at www.report.rcmp.ca/pei and on the PEI RCMP website.
The Online Crime Reporting Tool gives Island residents, in RCMP areas of jurisdiction, an alternate way to report certain non-emergency crimes without calling police or having to visit a detachment. This tool is a fast, effective way to report crime available 24/7. The process takes about 15 minutes to complete and can be used to report crimes such as:
- Mischief/damage to property under $5,000
- Theft under $5,000, for example theft of bicycle and theft from vehicle under $5,000
- Lost property
It is not meant to replace other forms of reporting crime and the public should always call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
“Given the broad acceptance of online platforms, offering the public the ability to report certain crimes online just makes sense,” says PEI RCMP Acting Commanding Officer Superintendent Kevin Lewis. “This secure reporting tool is easy, the public are provided with an incident number which can then be used for insurance purposes, and it will contribute to increasing the effectiveness of policing,” adds Lewis.
The Online Crime Reporting Tool should not be used to report:
- stolen property such as firearms, credit cards or personal identification items, such as driver’s licence or passports
- stolen or damaged property greater than $5,000 in value
- crimes where there are witness or video evidence
All reports into this new tool are reviewed by the RCMP, entered into the RCMP records management system and should additional information be needed, an RCMP officer will reach out. Please remember, filing a false police report is a crime.
