Portage la Prairie — Portage la Prairie RCMP investigate drug trafficking after traffic incident

Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

On October 4, 2023, at approximately 7:25 pm, a Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was on patrol on 3rd Street Northeast in the city when a dirt bike was seen at a high rate of speed turning onto Trenton Avenue. The officer activated the emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver of the dirt bike did not stop. Due to the high rate of speed, the officer de-activated the emergency lights and did not pursue the offender in the interest of community safety.

The officer could still see the dirt bike ahead on the road when the driver began to cross the train tracks and the bike toppled onto its side. The rider then dropped a backpack and fled on foot southeast into a cornfield.

After retrieving the backpack, the officer found a large knife and a set of brass knuckles. The officer called for RCMP Police Dog Services and more officers to help contain the area. It was quickly determined that the male had got into a vehicle and was able to leave the area.

Inside the backpack, police found cocaine as well as drug trafficking paraphernalia.
