La Ronge RCMP continued to investigate this collision with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
Further investigation determined the suspect vehicle, which had been reported as stolen to La Ronge RCMP on September 29, struck another vehicle after the collision involving the pedestrian. One of the occupants of the vehicle reported non-life-threatening injuries to police.
On September 30, 2023, the pedestrian was declared deceased in hospital. He has been identified as a 56-year-old male from La Ronge. His family has been notified.
As a result of continued investigation, 21-year-old James Misponas from the La Ronge District is charged with:
- one count, operation of a conveyance with blood alcohol concentration equal to or exceeding 80 mg causing death, Section 320.14(3), Criminal Code;
- one count, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death, Section 320.13(3), Criminal Code;
- two counts, operation of a conveyance while impaired causing bodily harm, Section 320.14(2), Criminal
Code;
- two counts, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, Section 320.13(2), Criminal
- two counts, failure to stop of the scene of an accident causing bodily harm, Section 320.16(2), Criminal Code;
- two counts, failure to stop of the scene of an accident causing death, Section 320.16(3), Criminal Code;
- one count, possession of stolen property over $5,000, Section 354(1), Criminal Code; and
- one count, possession of stolen property under $5,000, Section 354(1), Criminal Code.
He appeared in La Ronge Provincial Court on October 2, 2023.
