Quick work by RCMP members saved a woman in mental distress in New Denmark, N.B.

On September 10, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., members of the Saint-Léonard RCMP detachment attended a residence to arrest an individual on assault charges. The arrest was made without incident. While police were still on scene, a woman arrived and was noticeably upset by the events.

Members became concerned for the woman’s health and wellbeing and while attempting to de-escalate the situation, the residence became engulfed in flames.

Police forced entry into the burning building, and removed the woman before she sustained any injuries from the fire and heavy smoke. After the woman was safely detained, police were able to extinguish the fire, preventing further damage to the residence.

Members of the New Denmark Fire Department also attended the scene and the woman was transported to the hospital to receive care.

“This was exceptional work and quick thinking by our members which demonstrates how a routine call for service can take a sudden turn,” said Sergeant Jean-Pierre Bouchard of the Saint-Léonard RCMP detachment. “We are thankful that everyone escaped the house safely.”
